I was trying to pull my flywheel and was pulling with a 3 jaw puller on the top AL part. That was obviously a mistake cause i broke about a 2.5" piece off the edge. Is this gonna hurt anything to keep running it like this. Do i need to JB weld it back on to keep it in balance or just get a new one?

Im gonna try to pull the steel toothed ring now.

DO NOT try and JB weld it. Your'e gonna need a new flywheel. Do not run it like that, engine will be out of balance.

Re: Broke flywheel on Johnson 60HP 1981 model.

I got back from pulling on the metal ring. My impact and small 8gallon compressor dont have that much power but its cinced down with pressure. I have coated the shaft with pb blaster and tapped the flywheel to try and "break" it free. This hasent worked, any suggestions?

Its so tight i cant pull any by hand with the 1/2 inch ratchet and still hold the flywheel steady.

You need to pull it using the three small tapped holes around the flywheel nut. It takes a 3 jaw puller and some grade 8 bolts.

If you run it that way it could turn into a hand granade. Get a new flywheel.

A harmonic balancer puller may work. You can borrow one a Autozone or whatever you have in your area. It should have the bolts with it. Once you get tension on it, take a torch a heat the wheel up near the shaft. It should pop loose. Good luck.

Ok I got it. I have a big 3 jaw puller. I put tension on it let it soak. Came back put some transmission fluid on it (the best penetrent i have found) Tapped it harder all around and put the impact on it again and it popped off. Will get a new one. Thanks for the help. Probably hasent been off since 1981 when it was installed.

Not a jaw type puller. One like this:

Ill use that from now on, but at the point i was at on this one i broke the flywheel so i had to get it off. If i go back in again i will rent one and when i pull the flywheel on the 150 to replace the rectifier i will surely use one like that!

You can buy one for <$20 ... you need to get Gr8 bolts and washers, also.
