Ok I am sort of useless here but I have a boat that has an old 75hp johnson engine on it. I purchased it from a guy 3 years ago to use. It has served me well but today I pused the throttle all the way down and well it went past where it is suppsed to stop and broke.

I now have no throttle control. I can still shift into neutral and forward but I only have idle. I took the controller box off the side mount and the lever that I use to open up the carbs for starting basicall fell off. IT looks like there is a screw that holds this thing on and that screw broke. Needless to say I am guessign that somehow this caused the thing to fail. (I beleive the lever that opens the carbs for startign is called a warm up lever or somethign like that)

Ok I found the modle number of the boat but ran into more problems.

Modle number is J75TLCTE

I tried takign the remote control box apart this weekend to find out what broke and well I stripped the crap out of the screws. The darn things would not come out. I got one to move and it broke but the other two woudl not move and the screws are stripped.

At this point it looks like I need to get a new remote control and new throttle and shift cables. Can you guys help me figure out what control box and cables to purchase.

I would like to find the lowest cost option here but I would liek to get new parts so I can trust in them.

Here are pictures I took:

Also I pulled the remote tilt switch off the throttle lever so I can use that seperatly and don't need to re-wire it into a new unit but I can if need be. Looks like the engien is a 1983.

I just need somebody to tell me what remote control box and cables to purchase. Boat is 15 foot.

For cables, you can get those or order them from just about any marine parts store including this site. Just go to the top of the page and click on the 'Control Cables' link. For johnson/evenrude/omc engines you need either a Type 400 or 479. The 479's are for 1979 and newer models so I believe that is the type you need. All you need to do is figure out the length. the only way to do that easily is measure the length of the ones you have now (assuming they were the proper length).
Otherwise you will have to measure the complete distance the cable will travel. I know Teleflex recommends you add four feet to create a loop at the engine to allow movement. I don't know if everyone does that. I didn't on mine as a loop like that created a tripping hazard.

This is a photo of a 479 cable for your engine from the iboats site, does it look correct? http://www.iboats.com/mall/image/view/1/6/cc205_11.jpeg

As for the controller, there is eBay craigslist, and other used-parts locations to find a used one. BRP or dealers should be able to help you get a new one. Better get the controller first so you know the new cables will fit.

Regardless, you better get an OEM manual so you can hook everything up correctly.

Re: Broke my Remote control - need help finding the proper replacments.

The motor is 1983.

The control is what is broken but I am not even sure what part is broken because I can't get int othe box. I am goign to try an easy out and then try drilling the screws out of the box. The box will be ruined but I would like to see if the control cables and the elecrical wiring can be salvaged.

My big concearn right now is the electrical items. I talked ot a dealer that told me I can get the box to replace the old one but that I would need a newer wiring harness that that itself costs 125 bucks.

My remote has shift/speed/ignition starter/choke/trim.

The wiring inside and how it connects is the biggest concearn and if I can get that figured out I will just get a box from the site that sells old boxes and re-uses or buy new cables... Then all that is left is makign sure that the ignition key will work to start the motor...

Service Manual

I'd look into drilling out those screws if you can! There are several posts on how best to get broken bolts out. You need some type of solvent first to help loosen stuff up, then drill or use easy-outs. Hopefully others will chime in on how best to get these screws out.

I am going to try a set of easy outs that I have but I doubt that they will work at all. If they don't I will jsut try to drill out the screws. I put a ton of liquid wrench on the bolts last weekend so maybe they will be loose thsi weekend.

I will let you guys know what happens.
