Re: Broken block starter mount

Just in case, here are some pictures (not the greatest pics) of a bracket I made a couple years ago for somebody that broke the outer bolt hole out on a 350. It has held with no problems at all. It took me about three hours to make it. We noticed it was cracked when we were unloading it from the truck. We had just got back from the machine shop.

This took 20 mins, cost maybe $10 and is strong as can be, starter doesn't even budge. You can see where the mount is totally broken off just like yours. I got the idea from another member, he posted a picture of his back in like 2009. He said the boat worked like this for over 4 years without any problem. I tried EVERYTHING.. This is the best/only fix for a broken mount, other then replacing the block or welding in my opinion.

Will this work if the mounting ear has been previously welded? Also, do you need to pull the motor for this rig? I joined the board today, for this exact reason. I have a 4.3merc in a '95 Chaparral SST with the same exact issue. The starter will not tighten up in the hole and it makes a terrible grinding noise when I tried to start it the first time this season. Boat shop guy wouldn't touch it with a welder and recommended a new block. Anyone have any recommendations in the Richmond, VA area of a shop that would try this?

Welcome to iboat mcgriffi
You really should start a new thread of your own with your problem and engine. No reason to hijack someone elses thread.

Do you have the dimensions and sizes of the hardware you used? Also, did you have the metal plates fabricated or buy them as is?

It's actually a very very simple rig and you're over thinking it. Look at the bell housing, you'll see 2 screws on the outer edge that hold on the flywheel shield. The bolts get removed and the holes get drilled out to allow the threaded rod to pass through. I don't remember the exact size of the rod but it doesn't need to be thick since the starter is trying to pull the rod not bend it once it's in place. I think the rod can be like 8 - 11" long just get under and measure. The plate was something I had in the garage from an old gym set.. U can buy everything u need at homedepot and just cut it to size. The picture really says it all.. I'll be at the boat this weekend.. I'll grab more pictures for ya.
