Broken brush

After an afternoon at the lake and attempting to reload the boat on to the trailer, couldn't tilt up. We had to manually raise it in order to place the transom saver under it. Got home and took it apart. One of the brushes broke off the wire. I looked around the web, things I need to pair it are expensive. I just want the whole cap assembly. I'm not opposed to just soldering a new wire and brush into the existing cap assembly. Any comments or thoughts would be great.

Personally, I would look for replacement brushes even using non-standard brushes used on power tools. You can always sand it down to get the proper size and modify the pigtail wire connection to fit it. Try searching the net using the search criteria, "power tools carbon brush replacement". They only costs as little as $5. The most important criteria besides the size is the grade rating of the brush itself.

I can tell you from experience and having it to my motor re-winder, that it is a mongrel of a job to re-connect those brushes, as they are brazed on not soldered.
IMO you would be better getting a new motor, by the time you or your motor re-winder stuffs around with it, it will be cheaper to buy the motor new and with less hassles. I have 2 of these motors do that to me, sent them to my mate at the motor rewinders, the first one he fixed for $125 aus, but it took longer to do than he charged me, the second one he rang me and advised it would be cheaper to buy new.

New brushes and new springs are available for around $15 + shipping. The cap assy. is NLA, so you would have to get one off of a used motor or old stock.

After reading up on brushes I found out that there are a lot of different kinds. The different components like graphite carbon and copper just to name a few have very different applications. I have some replacements from an old belt sander that just need to sanded down to fit my trim motor. I don't know what there are made of or if they will even work. If I can buy the just kind I need that would be awesome. PNW said there are $15 plus shipping, where can one go to order them? Thanks again, Tom

Hey, it doesn't get any clearer and easier than what PNW provided. No need to cut and trim just order the standard brushes for $15!

So do you have any idea what caused the brushes to break? You need to diagnose the cause as this is not normal for any brushed motor.

I think I need to put more oil in the reservoir because it was struggling to lift the motor from the transom savor before launching. When in reverse the motor comes up. The motor doesn't leak down, rrit rebuilt it for me about two years ago. All this and old age is my best guess why I broke a brush. I could be wrong. What do you all think?

Just make sure the armature is really clean and smooth when you install the new brush. There are two reasons why a motor will break brush(es), uneven armature copper contacts and overheating.
