Re: Broken Leaf Spring - Dumb Luck w/ afew questions

Well I was hesitant to post this but being that you are a welder you likely have a fair grasp on mechanical things... a couple blocks of wood, 2 chains and 2 ratchet binders would make that trailer mobile enough to safely limp it at low speed 2 miles to the water.

Personally I would just leave the boat on the trailer and use two jack stands just behind the axles and my truck on the front to support it but if you really want it offloaded to do the job it CAN be done but just not AS IS....

jack it up and put blocks between frame and axle and use the chains and ratchet binders to lock the axle in place.... might not be a horrible idea to have a spotter walk along side and watch the setup closely but in an emergency I have hauled a trailer MUCH further than 2 miles with the axle chained in place

Forgot the mention...

One of the reasons I wanted to drop the boat was because I also planned on swapping the brackets for the bunks also. The bunks themselves are good, but I might replace as well. Question: is there an advantage to using "starboard type caps" on the bunks vs carpet? I see these caps advertised and never used them before... gimick? or worth it?

I'll take some more pics before and after for those interested. I'm the 3rd owner and I knew the 2nd... boat is 2001, assuming trailer is as well. As far as I know, nothing has EVER been touched... so its 12 year old parts. <--This is why I knew this day was coming soon.

to be honest, with what I see in your future with this project (not knowing how much time you can devote to it) I think before you are done you are looking at a few weeks of work here redoing the trailer top to bottom then (if you are like me) will want to finish it off by brushing it down with a new galvanized coating so its new again.

I would suggest you slide the boat off of the trailer in your yard and then you can dive into this project with no pressure to rush anything.

get some wood blocks and I know someone here has the link to the thread about the easy way for removing the boat from the trailer in your own yard
