Re: Broken Piston Ring

The Wiseco is slightly less. They come with rings, pin & clips. Sometimes the OE piston doesn't so by the time you add up everything the Wiseco is usually cheaper. And they have sizes the OE doesn't, that'll give you some additional options.

Re: Broken Piston Ring

Ok, one last question. I'm hoping that only my top cylinder is bad, and not the other 2, so if this is the case, can I replace just the top one with a Wiseco or should I stay OE for this purpose? I just can't afford $500+ in rebuild parts right now, not counting machine shop costs. If not, I guess the suggestion would be stay with the same, either all OE or all the same brand (i.e. Wiseco). One OE .030" piston with rings is like $105.

Yes, you can mix the pistons, no problem. However, don't be shocked that the other 2 measure close the the max tolerance. Especially if you're planning on honing them.

Re: Broken Piston Ring

Thanks. I've got it taken apart down to the flywheel, crank, pistons and rods. Need to find out how to get the flywheel off. Time to start searching on here, I know I've seen it....

Yep, just need a puller and the bolts. No big deal really. It's best to use the hardened shoulder bolts from Bombardier if possible.

Found it. Harmonic Balancer (I haven't done it yet, that's for tomorrow) and some bolts, grade 8, 3" in length. I'll finish it up tomorrow hopefully, then maybe I can get by a marine shop Thursday and find out where to take it. I've heard not to use auto machine shops.

Re: Broken Piston Ring

you heard right no automotive shops ,
well i say that the guy that does mine does both
you will need outboard machine shop and automotive machinst
could mic it up for ya but most arent capable of blind boreing
and arent setup for outboard around here to bore one hole runs between 35 and 55 dollars a hole sleeving is 85 plus sleeve, you can probaly hone your other holes your self ,but its safer to have it done ,some people get carried
away with hone ,

Re: Broken Piston Ring

Nathan: Don't no where you are on your rebuild or if you are even doing it but your cylinder looks very similar to mine. As I stated earlier it was the piston ring pin that backed out on mine. I just finished my rebuild a few days ago and I'll give you an outline of my rebuilld. 1994 Evinrude 200hp looper.
Engine machining costs were about $350. That was for 1 sleeve installed bored and honed to standard size and the 5 remaining ones that were honed and deglazed. I was able to stay with all standard size pistons as the remaining cylinders checked out OK. I have a total of about $1100 in the rebuild. The remaining $750 was for 6 new pistons, 1 gasket set, 2 thermostats, 1 complete water pump and a few other misc. items. I did all work except the machining. You may be able to get off a lot cheaper if you feel comfortable using the existing pistons and just replace the bad one. I would think you would want to at least put new rings on all pistons but I am not an engine mechanic so have someone qualified help you with that call. You may also be able to bore your bad cyl oversize which will also save you money. My cyl was too far gone and resleeving was the only option. I am happy to say I started the engine a few days ago and so far it is running pretty good. Its a great feeling when that big engine comes to life. I only have about 30 minutes of run time on it and I am still breaking it in. Good Luck in what ever you decide and if I can help let me know. I never rebuilt an engine before so the best advice I can give you is to work slowly and carefully and keep everthing clean. Don't get in a hurry and if you don't understand something stop and research it untill you do.
