Broken tiller - OK to weld it?

So as noted in this thread, I snapped the tiller off my outboard today.

The tiller itself did not break, rather the handle/brace/part/whatever that attaches the tiller to the motor. See 2011-10-27_10-27-50_980.jpg.

Apparently only a yamaha dealer can get the part, and they quoted me $150+ for the parts needed. I have a friend who has a welder, so I'm wondering if that is an option. Would welding it work? What kind of metal is the part probably made out of?

Thanks for your help.

I'm guessing that part is either aluminum or stainless steel, I'm confident it could be welded if you can get at it, hopefully without a lot of disassembly. If you weld the part still attached to the motor, be careful about the fuel lines, carbs, etc...it's not worth getting hurt over! Good Luck!:)

After looking more closely at the photo, I'm sure that piece is aluminum and should be easy to weld, but again, IF you can get at it without blowing up the motor!

Yes, and without melting the wires, too. ;)

(I hope) if you can take the piece off to replace it, then surely we can take it off to weld and put it back. :)

I would disasemble that, and then have it alum tig welded.
pretty sure it's alum. cast
BUT a GOOD WELDER would , or should know how to do it.
