broken water tube, help!

Stripped down my 1990 6hp evinrude to replace the water pump impeller (not getting much flow). Before reassembling everything I checked water flow through the crankcase by attaching a hose to the water pipe. Turned on the tap and most of the water was coming back down the engine leg inside. The copper water tube was split (I've now broken it off after wiggling it).

Do I need to remove the crankcase to replace this part? I have a manual coming from the U.S (I'm in the U.K) but I'm not sure how long it will take. Could anyone point me in the right direction in the meantime?

Also, I've noticed that the parts listings for these water pipes all say no longer available. Will I be able to get a replacement part somewhere? Or will I be able to make one?

Thanks

Re: broken water tube, help!

The part is available from a few dealers. If you go to http://shop2.evinrude.com and drill down to your engine, you'll find the water tube in the midsection parts list. It shows as "Dealer Direct," and the site will let you search for dealers who have the part in stock. You can give one of them a call or visit it if it's close. You may be shocked at the price of a piece of tubing, though.

On the other hand, that is a straight tube, and can probably be fabbed up from the proper outside diameter tubing. It will need to be exactly the right length, though, and I don't know the length. If you have the broken one, you can measure it.

You might be able to get it in the upper grommet without pulling the powerhead, but you may also not be able to. However, if it broke off and the upper piece is still in the engine, you'll end up having to pull the power head. I've never done it on that engine. A strong flashlight will be needed.

Good luck with your repair.

Thanks for the advice. Looks like I'm going to have to take the powerhead off, the pipe is broken where it goes through a supporting web.

Be sure to save all portions of the water tube, in case you have to make your new one. You'll need to measure the overall length. I didn't notice that you weren't in the USA, so you may have more problems getting a new one. Not to worry, though...you'll be able to get tubing the right size.
