Re: brought her home yesterday

Nice boat bandit, a lot of it for sure. Looks like a lot of fun to be had by the bandit family this summer. Just be sure to NOT tow in overdrive and make sure you have an add-on transmission cooler.

I'll leave other opinions to people with more experience but my thought is that I wouldn't do more than local towing with the 3.0L.

BTW, after loading your pics in photobucket why did you not just post them here?

Very Nice boat. Should be a blast to use and give ya lots of great memories. When is the maiden voyage?

I think what most people will say is that the 3.0L can pull it (prolly not too well and like boom said will NEED a tranny cooler if it doesnt have one), but can it stop it? Thats the big issue. I imagine that boat is pretty heavy, whats the van rated for?

Re: brought her home yesterday

she couldnt take highway speed very well, 55 was a bit too much, some up hills were 2nd gear full throttle jobs, but after the 1st 30 minutes, once in familiar territory we came on side roads. Stops great.

I'd fip ya off if you drove down the same highway as my family.... just my $.02 Too much weight, you'd never be able to stop it before you rear ended me and killed my kid in the back seat.

I pulled half that boat with twice the blazer and quit because it was too much weight.

...but I do love the boat.

Idk, maybe we could remember that not everyone has lots of towing expirience, and take it into consideration that they may not realize the dangers they may or may not be causing. I see the point, and I agree that pulling that rig with that van is obsurd, but there are far more productive ways to make that point imho.

The aerostar is rated for 4400#s, I read that some of them were good for 5000 with the bigger engine. with the 6000# rated aluminum trailer I was just over 5300#s, (there s not a drop of gas in the boat's tank.)
I tried a couple stops before i hit the highway, stopped pretty reasonable, them brand spankin new disc brakes on that trailer worked like a charm, never felt it push the van

Re: brought her home yesterday

I tried moving my 3800lb boat\trailer around the yard once with my Ranger 3.0 (same chassi as teh aerostar). The problem wasn't moving the load. I had teh power to do so, but knew it was a bad plan when I hit the brakes, locked them, and still slid 10' from 5-7mph....

The 3.0 is a great motor. mine has 180k and still gets 25+ mpg, but that's too much weight.

Lock it up at 55 and see how well it stops. No one is talking about how well it stops under normal conditions....

Love the boat! It's huge! You are going to have an awesome summer with that. Do you have a name picked out yet?

if I ever have to tow it again with the van, I'll never go over 45 if that, I like my transmission too much. Once was enough. But I might take her out and try the brakes at high speed on an empty road to see if it behaves properly, at least I'll know what to expect

No, no name picked out yet, no name on her anywhere either, none in the paper work, but there is the outline of something on her.
I think I'd like to go with a girl's name, it's what my cars are named after

bandit86, I believe the fella's here are concerned for your safety as well as your families, and don't forget other drivers on the road..........i think you need to upgrade your vehicle with a more appropriate tow capacity and much needed stopping power.

Sweet boat.

Better pick your boat ramps carefully. If it is steep at all, that van wont pull it out of the water.

Ken
