So you have to wonder if 25 years from now our kids will be posting on here that they wouldn't touch a small motor made after 2011. LOL. The world.... she keeps a changing. Truth be known, I've heard good things about Tohatsu's but mostly to do with price point up here in Canada. Rick.

E-V-I-N-R-U-D-E or M-E-R-C-U-R-Y or N-I-S-S-A-N. :) Or just plain ole Tohatsu since they make all 3 now (plus their own)

My wonder is whether our kids will even want to post here because they won't even own a boat...or a house. Where will the jobs be then? We can't all be nurses and Walmart cashiers.

Being an old OMC person myself, that " Sucks". Ole Evinrude wouldn't turn over in his grave, he'd spin.

Somewhere I heard that the portable Honda's were also on the list.. Yamaha may be the last hold out.

yamaha holdout ? merc built their lower units and midsections for years, til they learned that motorcycle engines wouldn't work on water,,yamaha also built some small horse engines for merc.,tohatsu builds everything under 50hp for mercury. they also have the best direct injection, system in the industry on their own motors. tohatsu has a huge distribution center in texas. they also train their tech;s(in factory schooling) and dealers in texas, they make very good motors IMO,

That is interesting. Just the other day I was thinking about Evinrude & how the E-tec motors start around 25 h.p. & go up from there. I was wondering if they would develop any smaller motors, but with just about as much labor & materials going into a smaller motor as a large one, cost vs. selling price can turn it into a money-losing venture. I guess BPR looked at it from all angles and decided this was the most viable option.

Emission laws have forever changed the face of outboard offerings. Around 2008 I was willing to buy a brand new leftover 2006 Johnson 9.9 (last of the 2-strokes) but I didn't have the thousands free to spend, and it was snapped up quickly anyway. For now I am glad that so many parts are still available for older Johnsons & Evinrudes. Because of that I couldn't resist picking up a small kicker or two. Since I couldn't decide I ended up buying both a 1976 Johnson 15 (runs fine, hopefully a fun project) & a 1967 Johnson 9? (low hours; inconvenient to work on & ugly but I simply love them).

Re: BRP to offer Tohatsu made outboards

Two years ago I shopped around for a new longshaft 6 HP for our sailboat. Would have loved to have an Evinrude or a Johnson, but Evinrudes only start at 15HP, and Johnson's have not been made since 2007.

I ended up buying a Mercury, thinking I was getting an American made motor. Small suprise when I found out that I bought a Mercury painted Tohatsu (all Merc's 30 HP and under in the U.S. are Tohatsu's).

I would have really liked to have seen BRP bring back the Johnson engine line for the small HP market, even if they are four strokes. I don't know how small they can scale down the E-TEC technology, maybe too expensive to develop and produce.

Here's a link to BRP's press release:

I don't understand why anyone wouldn't buy a tohatsu just strickly for price only as they are cheap to buy and bulletproof. All the outboards are bulletproof today no matter what you buy and made in another country,no way around that.Funny about the loyal johnson people,no offense to anyone but i have had 3 of them.A 15hp a 6hp and a 8hp all 2strokes and have had nothing but problems with them. All the motors had good compression on them but everything aroung the powerhead fell apart unlike all the tohatsu's,mercs or yamahas i have had.I'm not saying that johnsons are bad motors i'm just saying i must have bad luck with them. Now the new etecs look sweet, that will be my next bigger outboard in the future a 25hp etec. The technology has come a long way with these motors.

BRP is making some interesting decisions and amazingly enough the decisions are right after they hired folks from other struggling companies. The most amazing was the decision to cut the service reps.

There's still hope for the Johnson name. A few months ago BRP reserected the old "OMC System Matched" name for the parts line offered thru an independent distributor. Things are indeed "a changing".

Re: BRP to offer Tohatsu made outboards

One of my local marinas offer boat rentals and they have 20-24ft pontoons with 25hp Parsuns outboards. They have very little trouble with them but parts are scare in the states. They have a couple of engines that was purchased as donor motors if needed. Just goes to show that the small 4 stokes are good engines no matter the brand..As to BRP "OMC System Matched"items, I signed on and now get OMC/BRP parts at dealer cost, items are somewhat limited to what you can get but they are a adding:D....

Faz, as you order parts keep in mind if they don't show a cross between the newest OMC number and their number try crossing an older number for the part. Some items aren't croossed to the latest ones yet.

Yep its weird as to what they supplied Donovan. I ordered a set of 3.3 pistons from them and could get the starboard side but not the port??? Yea the new numbers start out with 777 and checked thru dealerport and they are at dealer cost. Seen Mr Law saturday as he is on vacation:D
