I know this really isn't the proper forum for this, but I know Don is lurking and he might hold the answer I seek.

I have a 1954 7.5 Evinrude I use for trolling on my fishing boat. I stopped at the auto parts store today for my yearly purchase of 2 Champion spark plugs (J7 I believe they are). The guy behind the counter told me they carry special Champion Marine plugs in bulk for 4.99 each, but standard J7 plugs (carded) are 2.99 each. I asked what the difference is. He quickly stated that they have a "special non-corrosive washer" that is better for marine application. I asked to see the plug and the box. He returned with just a plug. There were no different markings on the plugs at all.

I think he was BSing me. Accurate or not?

I bought the 2.99 ones.

Using those standard J7s you'll be lucky to get 53 years use out of that engine. Do what you want, I like my stuff to last. :)

First of all, I wouldn't put a Champion spark plug in anything other than the trash can.
But, they are probably right, if you plan on getting your engine all wet with salt water, it may help. But if you keep it dry, change them yearly, and take reasonable care of it, those special marine plugs make no sense.

The motor is a 1954, but it is only 6 years old and in pristine condition.

I was at an estate sale and it was sitting in the back corner of the barn covered in about 1/2 inch of dust...still in its ORIGINAL PACKING! The motor was never uncrated. I asked the woman how much for the motor, she said $20...I said okay! She told me her husband worked for an insurance company and won it as a sales incentive in 1956. It had sat there ever since. He didn't own a boat.

I replaced the impeller and the coils. It fired right up. Starts firts or second pull every time.

It came with champion plugs new, and I've stuck with them just because I'm too lazy to cross ref other brands, and to date I haven't had a need to change.

I dock on fresh water and take excellent care of my toys. I have no use for $2 anti corrosive washers.

New to 5.7 gmc, but my experience has been:
A/C works on gm products.
Champion works on- ain't found one yet.and never put one in a drag-race Mopar.
Motor craft may work on a Ford (auto- light)
I just ain't a believer, from 30 years of buying plugs.
A/c seems to work, have them cross index (at times, you may need to change the heat range, to cross over)
Skatty or Super nova has an excellent thread in here(search it)
On plug reading.
I printed it out, but lost it in my shop..
