I purchased a used 2003 pontoon boat with a 90 Hp Evinrude FICHT. It was cold weather and when I had the owner run it on muffs, telltale stream was strong and I noticed no water discharged through exhaust. I assumed water was injected into the exhaust stream when thermostats opened and that we hadn't run the motor long enough for them to open. When I pulled the boat out of the water, I noticed a prop shaft oil leak.
I replaced the seals and ran the boat another month or so and noticed they were leaking again. I bought more seals and when I removed the prop, one of the seals had spun out and the lip of the seal looked crusty as if burned with flame. After seeing that, I remembered the first set of seals also looked burned when I removed them.
I started looking for a cooling problem and discovered that no matter where I put water in the motor, none discharged through the exhaust. I even removed the thermostats and out water through both passages.
After speaking with BRP customer service, they thought there was a restriction under the power head. I didn't want to take on that job so I took it in to a dealer. He allowed me to assist in the troubleshooting and we were unable to find where water enters the exhaust stream. He contacted BRP and they couldn't tell us where water should be injected. He contacted another tech rep after I left and they recommended replacement of the exhaust tuner which will wind up costing roughly $1300.00 and no one will guarantee it will cure the problem.
I've had this problem as long as I owned the motor and suspect the previous owner had the same problem from the start and sold his troubles to me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
