One of my 2 2x4" carpeted bunks is completely rotten and the carpet is the only thing thats holding most of it together. The other one is sound and in pretty good shape for 2003:confused: ????. I guess the carpet on the rotten one held water like a bag around the wood?

Re: busted bunk

Carpet does retain water for a while and can contribute to wood deterioration. Some wrap the carpet and leave a void space on the bottom and that may help dry more quickly. My advice since one of your bunks is rotted to go ahead and replace both. It's only a 2x4 so do it while you're at it. There's all kinds of advice for replacement......treat standard 2x4's with some brand of deck sealer (thompsons wood treatment) or use pressure treated lumber, in which case is ok, fine except use galvanized screws/bolts and use a piece of tar paper between the pressure treated lumber and any metal bunk bracket. Also be sure and use rust proof staples for the carpet and do not staple anywhere the bunk contacts the hull.

Re: busted bunk

I need to do the exact same thing...one of my bunks is completely rotted & falling apart while the other is like new. I'm wondering if prev. owner had changed only one in the past, Who knows? I was thinking about just buying one of those pre-assembled bunks at Gander Mt., I think a set of (2) 5' long carpeted, PT wood bunks go's for about $50. I just think it would be quicker & easier to just pick those up & slap them on real quick. Should do it today, weather forecast is for nasty thunder storms up around the lake areas today, good day to do a little maintenance.

Re: busted bunk

I looked in to replacement bunks and like the composite or non wood idea. But my bunks are 8.5' long and I couldnt seem to find any in my short search. looking at the price of 6' bunks Im guessing around $130 for 8.5' wooden ones. I made mine for about $35 including new galv.lag screws and hand picked the heaviest best grained treated wood I could find, like $6 2x4x10. I may come to regret using the cheap indoor outdoor carpet , but I can recover them when it wears out. The good stuff was expensive, and 25mi. away.
