busted cylinder block

Hello
I recently blew a hole through the side of my 1974 50 HP Evinrude engine, model # 50473M. ( a piece of the piston broke off of the (skirt?) and pinballed around in there till it reached a moving parts area that punched it through the side. ( and banged the other side good, too ) It can almost be welded, but it's cast aluminum, so.... Anyone have any ideas? - a parts engine or any leads? I'm dead on the water. I would need the whole cylinder block. ( and would buy a new piston )

Hi Randy
"But it's cast aluminium so ". So weld it. If you can't find someone that can do it, then your looking for another complete crankcase. My Guess is at this point it would be more cost effective to just get another used running motor and call it a day.

JB Weld to the rescue!!! or Marine Tex, they claim to be able to withstand the guff of Block Patchin Duty, and its cheap enough to give it a shot, why not?

stay close to the dock the first few times

have SeaTow on speed dial on the cel

I do!

LOL

Thanks for the replys guys. Welding still might be an option. I wouldn't do it myself - I'd have it done. I let my local mechanic have a look ( hoping on getting a name ), he saw the aluminum cast, and made it sound as though some expertize is required. If he wouldn't do it, I sure won't. One lead he gave me is trying a lawnmower shop.

I really would like to find a new block. I can get a whole remanufactured powerhead for $1450 minus $250 core charge. That's a little rich for me...but an option.
