I cradle is exactly what it sounds like. You build something that will support the sides of the hull so that they don't move out of shape as you remove the floor, stringer and transom. I usually take measurement starting at the transom and measure across the hull (beam) and make a sketch and place those measurement on the boat sketch. And I do every foot to the bow. That way you have a good measured sketch so that everything fits back like it is supposed to. And that is extremely important if you decap the hull.

Well well where do I begin. First off thanks for your help. I began pulling up the sole and found like yall sad rot on top of rot. Oh and I cut thru the hull. Guess I'm gone learn a lot this go round. Oh and I'm pretty sure transom needs replacing, did drill test after I got thru the fiberglass to the wood, the wood was wet.

ok, here's the plan. I cant take the cap off so I'm left to do what I can.

I'm going to remove all the old wood and foam, replace the stringers and foam in the sole. The deck is solid and is glassed, no noticable wood or rot. The problem comes 8n when I have to do the back of the boat. I'm hoping I can dig the foam out of the stringers in the sole which would give me access to get up under the the section that holds my seats so I can clear that out also. Since I cant remove the cap that's the only way to get to it.

Once the boat is cleaned out I let you all know. If you have any guidance please chime in.

Do I really have to get out that foam?

Be careful what you wish for! This challenge is going to cost you at least $3,000-$6,000 plus whatever 150 hours+++ of your time is worth.


Just about done with mine, took me 2.5 years of work, labor of love I suppose!

I honestly don't see how you are going to accomplish replacing stringers and transom without removing the floor. But it is your boat and your plans. Some have reworked their boats without decapping, but I would think that takes a lot more time and effort. But keep us posted with pictures.

I am seriously considering removing the cap. My question is if I make a cradle will it be safe to remove the hull from the cradle flip it over do the repairs to the keel, and paint then put the hull back in the cradle and work on the stringers and transom.

Yes you can remove it from the cradle to repair the bottom. But you need to make absolutely sure when you are finish with all bottom repair work, it will fit back into the cradle. And before de-capping the top, measure and make sure you write down all those measurements to use later on. I did that on a sketch of the hull, about ever foot or so from the transom to the bow measuring across the hull (beam). Some use their trailer as the cradle. But you need to install some really good side supports if you go that way. You are basically holding the hull so that the sides don't splay out and the cap won't fit back on.

That is the pressure tube that should go to your speedometer. Its not the transducer for the depth finder.

Thanks, does it go to the fish finder, or the speed odometer on the helm. Trying to decide to keep or throw away

If its a tube, it goes to the speedometer. You can buy a replacement hose for about $10
