Buying a 16' starcraft

Im looking into buying a 1969 16' starcraft i got emailed about. it has a 50hp outboard 1973 evinrude which he says runs great and will prove when i look at it The boat leaks so I'm assuming rotten floor maybe transom he said its from the seam but i know a guy who tig welds for cheap.The seats are plywood so I might put seats in. It also has steering pulleys which I'm not used to (having only owned tiller boats). He's asking $900 says he's pretty firm but I can probably talk him down a little bit. Im waiting for more pictures but I have this one to work off of. Do you think its a fair price and assuming the motor is good and trailer what should I expect to have to put in? It has all the proper paperwork also. Any idea what it would be worth restored?

$900 for a leaking 40 plus year old boat is kind of steep, if it needs new floors I would think that's about double what I would be a buyer at. But that's just me

I grabbed a 16 glass boat, with twin outboards for $600.00 it needed a floor too, but the power plants are worth what I paid, maybe this one is too.

Any ideas on whats its worth in fixed up shape? I failed to ask about the condition of the deck and transom so I'm assuming the worst. but the way i look at it the boats worth $300 maybe a little less. I know the trailer is worth at least that ($300) and the motor in running condition while old still has value and figure $300 could be more but theres my money invested right there.

That's a pretty good deal for that.. It probably needs a couple repaired rivits and some Gluvit. floors and transom likely also, but it's a solid base to start with and looks to be a pretty nice trailer.

I'v seen simmilar 'restored' SC's up this way for $2k. don't know if they sold or not..

fixed up it's not worth much more than you are getting it for; IOW you will not recover your repair costs on resale. So don't buy it thinking that way.

Aluminum leaks aren't too hard to fix if you can find them and it' snot unusual for a tin boat that age to have some. i would not assume rotten anything, but look for it anyway.

to me this deal is buy it as is, use it as is, dump it when it gets worse. If you fall in love with it, you might repower it.

Look at the steering closely. The reason we don't have cabkle steering any more is the catastrophic effects of a snapped cable at speed.

First you can not weld riveted seams to stop a leak. That will not work. Welding is not a proper repair. Visit the restoration section to see the right way.

Make absolutely sure the motor is NOT an electric shift. If it has push button shifting just walk away.

Fully restored...... depending on the model 12-1500 unless you do an excellent job such as this one (that has a much newer motor) http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=524033

And...... You should measure that boat..... the 16 footer's did not have that windshield...... it is probably a Jetstar based on the windshield.......... it is not worth the asking price the way it sits...... not with plywood seats and leaks.

Thanks, I will measure it, Jetstars were 15' correct? I agree its not worth the price if it is a jet

So don't buy it thinking that way.

HC has it on the resale aspect^^^.

I sold the Jet Star in my signature and made a pile of cash, but, only because I was VERY careful about the budget along the way.

If I factored in my labor time for the build I prolly lost millions (give or take).

If you are looking for a great boat project this would be one. If you are looking to flip for $$$, you'll be kinda sad in the end.
