Re: Buying a High Mileage Vehicle

toyota 4runner 96 to 2000 pick ups are hard to find due to a recall on the frame 3.4 motor should last you roughly 300 400 k im running a 93 with a 3.0 ( you dont want that motor) but i have 358k on it
the 3.4 is pretty much bullet proof change the timing belt every 125k and your done
parts are cheap and pentiful
subaru is a airplane engine average life about 250 to 400 k
a bunch hard to work on but still a great buy
go get yourself a 99 4runner pay about 7000 less if you can and youll have it forever!
heres my baby climbing ( buy the way its stock)

I just wanted to make it clear, the Subaru engine isn't an airplane engine. It happens to be used in some experimental homebuilt aircraft, but 100% it is a car engine. The fact that it's horizontally opposed and compact makes it a decent choice for a plane, but it is NOT an airplane engine stuck in a car, it's a car engine stuck in a plane. And truth be told, it's one of the more problematic auto engine conversions for experimental airplanes. I highly recommend it stay in the car, where it belongs.

And yes a Subaru will go 400k miles, probably better than any other car on the road today. The reliability and safety of a Subaru are unmatched for the price. Hands down.

umm no
subaru is a offspring of fuji heavy industries and the subaru boxer engine was first an airplane motor! the engineers need to get from one side of the factory to the other ( many miles) so they used an airplane engine and a 4wd trans from parts on site subaru was born! the basic boxer engine came from an airplane and is still based off of that

Re: Buying a High Mileage Vehicle

We bought a 96' Silverado C1500 about 1-1/2 yrs ago with 229,000 miles on it. It has a 5.7 V8 and runs well. Uses NO oil, drives well, solid body. We bought it to be a occasional driver, to tow our boat and small pop up camper, as well as hold our fishing gear and general hauling. I would not hesitate to take it on a long drive, in fact took it on two last year over to Ohio and was surprised how well it ran and it gets decent gas mileage. I would have prefered a vehicle with 100,000 to 150,000 miles but this was too good a deal to pass up and we will only drive it 3-5K a year so it should last us a while. Has been well taken care of, had a total tune up right before we bought it as well as a new battery. And those 5.7's are hard tro beat. If I had to I could drive it more often however at some point you will have problems. Starters, radiators etc. don't worry me as I can deal with those. The worst would be a motor or, more likley a transmission. But a 1500 dollar tranny would be acceptable to me if that happens as it is a good truck. And I don't have money now for a newer one. There is one here locally similar with 350,000 miles on it and still going strong.
