Tohatsu makes the 15hp and lower and BRP rebadges them with a Johnrude decal...same with Merc. Yes the Tohatsu is a good motor just make sure a dealer is close if needs service..

Evinrude does make a 15 etec and all etec,s are u.s.a. made(and 2 stroke). That being said if its not etec and is 15 or below it toh.TOHATSU makes a fine reliable outboard.Johnson has ceased to exist since 2007.Sad.Not saying evinrude doesn't make 4 stokes they do through or by tohatsu all small portatables.,Answering your question more directly yes Tohatsu are good outboards and you couldn't go wrong buying one if that's what you want.

Yep my first outboard was a tohatsu. Very simple (it was old) and never had any big issues. Started right up every time.

I bought a new Tohatsu 9.8 (short shaft) in 2003 from Online Outboards.com .........It weighs about 80lbs and always starts/runs flawlessly!

Paid about $1650 then, and they're at $1900 now. Not much of an increase in 13 years! (inflation would make my $1650 in 2003 about $2150 in 2016)
http://www.in2013dollars.com/2003-dollars-in-2016?amount=1650

Also, the shipping was (and still is) included, and depending on the state you live in, you may not have to pay sales tax on the purchase (I didn't)

I still love that thing!!

If you want a black motor (Tohatsu with Mercury branding) it's going to be about $340 MORE

Now, OTOH, if you want a 20hp engine (Tohatsu), 115lbs, short shaft, no starter/GEN etc........ It's going to be about $2500 (Mercury Branded about $2950)

BUT..........If I was wanting a 20hp engine and could also use a 25hp engine, I would seriously consider an EVINRUDE ETEC. (lots more money but they are so cool!)
There is a 15hp ETEC but if you want 15hp and want any sort of portability, it's too heavy and doesn't really lend itself well to removing and throwing it in the trunk.

For the Money you cannot beat a Tohatsu. I have a 2007 Merc 5hp 4str..which is a Tohatsu...Have no issues. Will be purchasing a NEW 20hp Tohatsu, long shaft, electric start, power trim/tilt. Looking at $3199...same thing as a MERC $3600+
