are Tohatsu engines good quality? i'm looking to buy a new 10-20hp 4 stroke engine. the name brands are so expensive.
is getting them serviced a problem?
thanks
I bought a new Tohatsu 9.8 (short shaft) in 2003 from Online Outboards.com .........It weighs about 80lbs and always starts/runs flawlessly!
Paid about $1650 then, and they're at $1900 now. Not much of an increase in 13 years! (inflation would make my $1650 in 2003 about $2150 in 2016)

Also, the shipping was (and still is) included, and depending on the state you live in, you may not have to pay sales tax on the purchase (I didn't)
I still love that thing!!
If you want a black motor (Tohatsu with Mercury branding) it's going to be about $340 MORE
Now, OTOH, if you want a 20hp engine (Tohatsu), 115lbs, short shaft, no starter/GEN etc........ It's going to be about $2500 (Mercury Branded about $2950)
BUT..........If I was wanting a 20hp engine and could also use a 25hp engine, I would seriously consider an EVINRUDE ETEC. (lots more money but they are so cool!)
There is a 15hp ETEC but if you want 15hp and want any sort of portability, it's too heavy and doesn't really lend itself well to removing and throwing it in the trunk.
