If you were going to spend a year in a "cabin in the woods," what would you need? I don't mean some city slicker idea of tv's and computers. I mean what would you really need? Any country boys out there?

Give me some frozen burritos, a microwave, and some country music and I'll be happy. Ain't no way I'm going to be stuck in a cabin with the same woman for a year! Maybe a little porn... :p

Skip the flint and the dog.
I want a towel, a hand saw, and a fork and spoon.

A year huh. It is gonna depend on how "nature savvy" you are. If you can hunt, trap, snare, etc. you will be able to feed yourself with little from the store. If you have never done so, you will need a generator, gas and a freezer. Or, you will lose a lot of weight :D

My personal thoughts. Bring seed for your garden, a gun, traps, snares, salt, flour, current years - an ATV and/or snowmachine, snowshoes, winter clothing, some canned goods, maybe MRE's or Mountain House (Freeze Dried Food), an axe, hatchet, chainsaw and/or bowsaw, gas & oil for above items, bedding.

The list could actually get quite long. It all depends on how "au natural" you plan on getting.
:D :D
In other words, are you talking a "cabin in the woods" that is 50 miles from the nearest road, or one that you drive your vehicle to and have 15-30 minute access to a store.

AK Chappy

Nothing, except a Last Will and leave a note where you are so they can find the body next year.

Seriously, make a list of everything you touch daily and figure out how you would do without it. I am speaking of any any all the appliances, sinks, toilets, telephone, electric, ant store supplies such as groceries and just start building your list.

It is not too bad to live "off the grid" if you have access to food, clean potable water, shelter and fire. You can use solar power for a multitude of things.

After 20 years of active duty military I have a total of almost 4 years of "camping time" and people wonder why I just don't care to camp anymore!

Re: Cabin in the woods

Ron, I don't know yet. I'm just getting started on this thing. I'd like some hills. I'm leaning more towards "50 miles from the nearest road" and less towards "one that you drive your vehicle to and have 15-30 minute access to a store."
I know it sounds crazy, maybe it/I is/am. I just want to "drop off the grid" for a while.
Why? A lot of reasons. I just want out of this life. When I was a boy, I had three sisters brutally murdered. What was left of my family never recovered. My folks never spoke again. My mom went "crazy" from it and was never the same. Now it's 25 years later and my folks are dead, along with most of my extended family. Bob suggested I only needed a "Last Will and leave a note where you are so they can find the body next year." I think I would be OK with that. Sure I'm depressed. I have been for 25 years, but I'm not suicidal. And I'm not the Unibomber either. I just want to get away from all this.
I've found in the last few years that I just have nothing left to say. Not that I don't have my own thoughts, it's just that I seem to care less and less what people feel/think about my opinions. They're mine and are just as valid regardless of whether or not I reach a concensus regarding them.
So I'm going to buy a remote piece of land and a cabin somewhere. I can shoot, but I've never hunted. I can fish, but I'm certainly not the best. That's why I asked what a guy would need. I figured I would stock up on food and water. I'm not opposed to having to "come in for supplies." Preferably as little as possible.
So, maybe I am nuts, maybe I am not. What do I need to make this happen?

Re: Cabin in the woods

Okay now that there is more ....

Planning...
Try to set up a cabin with an alternative power source, water (prefer water that houses fish that can be caught and eaten and is clean).... have a way out to get to civility if you need to. Consider the weather (all seasons) and what effect it will have on your cabin.

Up here in VT the winters are less than admired by many and the snowfall amounts are high in the mountains. Heat and food are the main concerns.

It sounds like a good idea to collect yourself and take a personal inventory. Sorry to hear about your past if we can sincerely help let us know.

Bob

A few books would be good.
"How to" books on survival, gardening, hunting.
Still have to obey the hunting laws, so don't count on that for a steady or year round food source.

I would target an area with mild winters.

Good Luck, keep us posted.
