California 156 years ago!

Do you know what happened this week back in 1850, in California?

It became a state.
The State had no electricity.
The State had no money.
Almost everyone spoke Spanish.
There were gun fights in the streets.

So basically, it was just like California today except the women
had real XXXXX(edit) and men didn't hold hands

Re: California

According to my father in law, the Chinese would start every "lecture" at the POW camp with "As you know, California is the land of fruits and nuts" then, things usually went down-hill. When he was released, he was glad to get back to the almonds and peaches  In those days, the hand-holding was still purdy much confined to the Texas sheep, cattle, oil country :D :D There were lots of xxx's. That's what we were taught anyway, here in the land of fruits and nuts, as you know.

Re: California

Social preferences aside, if you want an interesting window on CA circa 1850, read Richard Dana's 'Two years before the mast'. Having spent the first 2/3rds of my life in So CA, I found it utterly fascinating. It was everything that Heycods aludes to and more. (or less)

Dana Point, a large CA landmark was named after the 1850 author of Two Years Before The Mast, Richard Henry Dana. It is half way between LA and San Diego.

Re: California

Fwiw, California is also the ONLY state that can hold its own. It has enough of everything needed to be self-supporting for its entire population; fresh water (some of the cleanest drinking water in the world comes from the Hetch Hetchy water system), industry, ranching, produce (San Joaquin Valley), oil in the ground and off the coast, everything. California is the only state that could survive as an independent country. If we could get rid of the liberals California could be a good place to live.

Honestly, I dread having to return to my home in California but I think instead of picking a better state it’s better to just pick a better country, something I would have thought impossible 15-years ago.
