Re: California

Now now, GQ. California's rep is well-Earned. Hollywood? San Fransico? The valley girls and "90210"? But hey... At least, it's well-earned fromn the outside lookin in.
Mind you, I am not insenstive to the stigma your state carries. Mine after all, has come under fire of late, as being the land-o-chads, dum-arse voters and Katherine Harris. You know-- "Floriduh"?
Best advice i can give you is turn the other cheek, dude. IOW, ignore it, other than considering the source....Because each state has it's skeletans in a closet someplace. :)
But I'll never forgive you for importing Walt Disney Inc. to the very center of Floridian orange country. (Just messin with ya there).

Re: California

GQ,

When it comes to skeletons, Wisconsin wins big. We got Dahmer and Ed Gein.

It appears you used US News and world report as your source for your position. Here is their listing of the top 50. Please pay special attention to #12, #15 and #42. Thanks for the additional posted information, it was very informative but really somewhat irrelavent to your original statement which I was responding to. Just selected factors that figure into the positions that the schools are placed at within the rating system. Please see the link I provided below.

How did you arrive at your above statements without seeing the list outlined below? Also your C&P above appear to be directly from this site. There seems to be exactly 9 in the top 50 and 2 in the top 10.

2) Each year our Colleges and Universities produce more entrepreneurs than any state. We have 9 Universities ranked in the top 50. Two of which in the top 10. A few years ago Cal-Tech and Berkeley ranked one and two respectively. We contribute so much in term of Science and Technology. You repay us by throwing mud pies and say we lack morals yet you want to be like us.
Here is the top 50 from my source. (I provided the link below)

1 Harvard University (MA)
1 Princeton University (NJ)
3 Yale University (CT)
4 University of Pennsylvania
5 Duke University (NC)
5 Stanford University (CA)
7 California Institute of Technology
7 Massachusetts Inst. of Technology
9 Columbia University (NY)
9 Dartmouth College (NH)
11 Washington University in St. Louis
12 Northwestern University (IL)
13 Cornell University (NY)
13 Johns Hopkins University (MD)
15 Brown University (RI)
15 University of Chicago
17 Rice University (TX)
18 University of Notre Dame (IN)
18 Vanderbilt University (TN)
20 Emory University (GA)
20 University of California – Berkeley*
22 Carnegie Mellon University (PA)
23 Georgetown University (DC)
23 University of Virginia*
25 Univ. of California – Los Angeles*
25 University of Michigan – Ann Arbor*
27 Tufts University (MA)
27 U. of North Carolina – Chapel Hill*
27 Wake Forest University (NC)
30 Univ. of Southern California
31 College of William and Mary (VA)*
32 Lehigh University (PA)
32 Univ. of California – San Diego*
34 Brandeis University (MA)
34 University of Rochester (NY)
34 Univ. of Wisconsin – Madison*
37 Case Western Reserve Univ. (OH)
37 Georgia Institute of Technology*
37 New York University
40 Boston College
40 University of California – Irvine*
42 U. of Illinois – Urbana - Champaign*
43 Rensselaer Polytechnic Inst. (NY)
43 Tulane University (LA)
45 Univ. of California – Santa Barbara*
45 University of Washington*
45 Yeshiva University (NY)
48 Pennsylvania State U. – University Park*
48 University of California – Davis*
50 Syracuse University (NY)

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/natudoc/tier1/t1natudoc_brief.php

You kidding right. I saw one in the top 50; Northwestern University. And also we have many private Universities which are not public funded.
I guess the question is are you kidding, since this seems to be your source as well as mine. I have to admit to being stumpted as to how you missed the U of Illinois being in Illinois. Heaven forbid I used NY as an example or try to lump New England together by geographic land mass that would be less than half the size of CA.

This is not an indictment of the state of CA good or bad. I would recommend anyone thinking of moving there to go there and enjoy. It is a wonderful state. Just pick your location within the state carefully. If you by chance are using a different source please share it so we can all can appreciate your position. Just want to make sure we all have the facts straight and I am not painting you in an unfair light. ;)

As far as women, I will defer and I am sure that anyone can find a source to dispell this one. This one is from Mens Health Magazine.

http://www.bikramyoga.com/press/press50.htm

This was taken a week ago. I think that 1/3 of all Californians were there and it wasn't even hot out yet.

Re: California

Nothing wrong with California, had plenty of good times when was stationed at Camp Pendleton, and twenty-nine palms. Learned to surf at Oceanside, even took some classes at MiraCosta College on Barnard Drive. If somebody looks real hard, might find the imprint of my face on one of the post on the pier at Oceanside, part of my learning experience in the fine arts of surfing. :( Used to be some rather good surf fishing on the base there dont know about now though.

Re: California

I lived in Monterey in the late 80's and loved it, although there's no way I could have afforded it if I weren't in the military. California is a beautiful place for sure with lots of diversity. I'm a desert rat though and I need my canyon country. I'll never leave Arizona.

Re: California

Pointer, I saw it. Making the top 50 doesn't say much. The requirements include tuition cost, enrollment rate.....etc. Kinda like judging a sport car by gas mileage. Academic is what important. As I posted above, if you will, notice more than one California Universities ranked 1,2 and 3. No other state come close. Yup the Finest are made here. ;)
