Re: Calling all Austrailians// kiwi phil?

Mellow, I occasionally carry my handgun. I don't believe i'm scared or paranoid. ................I don't call it scared, I call it prepared.

Sometimes, there are places that I go where the odds of something bad happening increases. On those occasions, I might carry my 9mm, the peace of mind it brings to me is priceless. I realize the odds of something bad happening is very slim, but i'm sure thats what everyone thought right before something bad happened.

I have two boys who are 7 and 9 years old. My theory is the same as my fathers. My two boys know about guns. They shoot guns with me. They know how to load and unload these guns. They know guns are not toys. They know that you never point a gun at anyone, loaded or not. They know to always check to see if a gun is loaded first. They know that they do not touch any guns unless Mommy or Daddy is present. I too have my guns and ammo locked in a safe place. I also have the one gun for protection. The gun is located in one place, and the loaded magazine in another. The point I am trying to make is, I see many parents that won't even let their children play with toy guns, and I feel sorry for these kids. I believe your better off teaching these kids about guns, instead of pretending like they don't exist. When my boys are older, and they are out with their friends, if they happen to come upon a gun, they will know what to do. I believe that many of these kids that hurt someone, or get hurt by these guns, are the kids that lack the education about guns.

I'm off my soapbox now. :p

next.

Re: Calling all Austrailians// kiwi phil?

Hi all,
I am 54 and have been handling guns (with my Dad) since I was 6 or 7 years old.
I have taken scouts onto a range for shooting after teaching them the basic safety rules prior to handling anything. Very satisfying. My son (24) also holds a license although he is currently in the UK and can't go shooting there as and when he wishes.
My sister is an Arms Officer with the Police and is responsible for issuing licences.
I don't believe that it matters what type of firearms anyone has so long as they suit the individuals needs. If I want to own a handgun I have only to join a Pistol Club and after a 6 month probationary period I can apply for a license to own.
There are 5 catagories of license here,
A/ General lic, covers all long guns except MSSA
B/ Hand guns (endorsement)
C/ Collector and for Theatrical Performances involving firearms.
D/ Dealer
E/ MSSA's (endorsement)

Our laws are fair at present as you can still own anything you want if you have the appropriate endorsement.
Security is a major factor in obtaining a license but not a big problem. Just means that everything has to be locked in a secure place when not in use. Guns separated from ammunition, bolts & magazines where practicable.
To purchase factory ammunition you must present your license. You are not permitted to sell any firearm to any person who has not got a license.

I hope that this helps you understand our situation. It is a little restrictive but we live with it. You can still have a lot of fun hunting etc.

Good luck

Peter

Kiwi Phil,
The story about Maryland gun shop is almost true.
It's a gun & rod club that raffles off a gun a month as a fund raiser. For about $20 you get a chance to win an assortment of handguns, rifles & shotguns for a year.
Don't forget the Carrol County Republican Party in Maryland that raffled off a Beretta 9 mm handgun. It threw all the local liberal papers in a tizzy. A little old lady won it & promptly stated that while she had never owned a handgun she was going to get instruction & keep it for self defense.
Before you get the idea that Maryland is the wild west, we have some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country.
Couldn't agree more jg.

M.Y. I agree about people being paranoid. I have a permit to carry but it is very rare that I do. I just see no need for me to do it. As many here know I travel all around this country on two wheels, I always take the back roads and avoid the major highways. I have been in some mighty bad place's all alone and have yet felt that I would need a deadly weapon to stay safe. I try to carry myself in a way that I wont become a victim. The last thing I would ever want to do is take a life. I know a few guys that carry that are just hoping to get the chance to pull that trigger. :( These types are doing the normal gun owner no favors.

I would never want to see the kind of controll on guns here that they have down under. I think we have to many restraints as it is. The bad guys will have their guns and knives no matter how many laws we have.

If you intend to do bad with a gun it dont matter if it is a single shot 22 pistol or a full auto M2 it'll kill just the same. If they ever come for my guns they might as well stay home cause they wont find em.

thanks Flathead, feel exactly the same way MYself.
I do enjoy shooting once in a while, but self
defense never enters my mind.
the odds that you will actually need a gun to save
your/family members life are probably about the
same odds as getting struck by lightning (guess),
and I don't see people going around with any
lightning rods for protection.
just seems like an unreasonable fear to me and
a silly reason to own a gun. also not afaraid one
day soon we are gonna need our guns to rise up
and fight the gov't niether.
