Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

by the way, is there anyone on here that lives in las vegas that has the knowledge and time to show a newbie boater how to change the oil, and perhaps a water pump, or impeller on an inboard outboard 87 Four Winns Freedom 160??? I would not have a problem paying for your time. I just want to learn how to do it, So I can do it myself and not have to feel like I should just junk my boat instead of paying to fix it, because shop prices are crazy depending on what you need done.

pm me if so, or just let me know, Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I figured. When we saw the weather monday morning, I just knew it was going to be the best day on the lake.
Glad to hear you guys had a good time in spite of your mechanical issues and made it back safely!

We really wanted to be out on the water monday, but I knew with the holiday vegas traffic going home would be a bear. Sure enough, just a hair over 6 hours to get home (compared to the ~4 hours it normally takes.)
Changing the oil in your boat is a pretty straight forward procedure, hit me up when you get a minute and we'll talk about it.

We'll be back out @ Mead in 2 weeks I think, look forward to less wind and warmer temps!
Hope everyone out there and their families made it home safely, we would like to have done more running around the lake over to Temple Bar to meet some of you folks, but the wind made for a choppy lake.

Little story:

We still had a great time.. on saturday when we pulled the boat off the lake, we were in the drying and drain area and the boat immediately in front of us pulled their plug.. I musta watched this thing drain for 30 minutes straight, no joke. Decent length boat (I/O), but not a lot of freeboard (specially not with 500 gallons of water in it, i'll bet!) Four drunk fellows and a chick.. I introduced myself, we got to chatting for a bit.. So I asked, "where's all that water coming from! holy!" and the woman began to explain that they had water up to their ankles in the boat, everything was completely soaked from the upholstery to the helm. I asked about their bilge pump, and one of the gentlemen shrugged and said "i dunno.. guess it doesnt work.. or we didn't turn it on"

Yikes! I told him they were VERY fortunate to have made it back safely, he just laughed.

sounds like my first time out on the lake with my boat. I didn't know what a bilge pump was and almost lost the boat, lol

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

We went out Sunday morning from Callville, what great service and freindly staff this weekend. Had a little trouble getting my boat started and no one pushed me to get it out of the way, they were courteous and gave me a little time to figure out what the issue was a correct it (wire disconnected from ignition switch probably from draging her down that temple bar road) While we were waiting the park ranger kept my 15 month old entertained and prevented her from throwing a fit while waiting. When we returned from our overnight at Sandy Cove were we had had a packing Glitch and ran out of water overnight, a worker saw one member of our party and thought she looked exhausted and offered her bottled water. What a wonderful staff!

Now as for Sandy cove...I really wish that if people wanted to go clubbing they would stay in vegas.. Bayliner named Ultimate Sports blasted music well past 3:00AM keeping us all awake as we tried to have a peaceful nights sleep on the beach. they returned about 10:00AM Monday and started all over again. Not sure why some boaters think everyone for miles wants to hear what they are listening too? Then some rock star (We heard he was Vince Neil) showed up and was blasting his music as well. The main reason I went to temple bar to start with was to avoid the party boats. I have to find another place.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Honestly, I didn't have any of the problems you mentioned this weekend. There was supposedly "1000's" of people @ Mead this weekend. We didn't see them. I saw maybe a total of what seemed like 100 boats or less on the water at any given time, I've had WAYYYY more traffic on any ole weekend compared to this Memorial. I'm sure the weather had something to do with it, but I really had no complaints (except for the wind) in regards to people, dock drama or anything. No loud music, no out of control partiers.. We just seemed to beach next to nice family folks wherever we ended up..

Sounds like a lot of things need to be done after the overheat as everything rubber/plastic downstream from the exhaust manifolds is most likely cooked; exhaust coupler(s), gaskets, shutters, water pump housing. Head on over to the Mercruiser Forum and they will be able to get you on track with manuals and advice.

Yeah, I (try to) avoid busy weekends just for that reason. The Virgin Basin isn't as busy with Overton Beach and Echo being closed down, far less traffic up there compared to past years. You need to be self sufficient up there as there are no modern conveniences in the Virgin basin anymore, no fuel, no store, no motel...

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

almost 70,000 views!!! meaders are looking for shure...
Glad you all had a good weekend and despite engine issues there was fun to be had,SANDY beach is not a place for a nice quiet night on any given night unless its november lol. They should have named it snob beach i think.Try pulling up in a 1971 starcraft lol.I would walk up the beach a ways and pass several fancy boats and not get one hello.
Now im workin on my 1985 four winns cuddy 19ft with 200hp merc and i hope its ready before the water gets cold!!!
Why would i trade off a perfect running cc boat in the prime?well lets say it as the only time i could make such a trade without cash and move up to a sweet asx boat.I started with 400 and now im in the 4000 range.

keep posting guys im glad your having fun and i live through your stories on awesome lake mead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I have been following this thread for awhile, now I'm finally getting to head down to Mead in June. Our plan is to spend 4 to 5 days shore-camping on the lake. From all of the good comments in here it looks like we will be heading over to Temp Bar and putting in there. Does anyone have recommendations for a good sandy place to step up "base camp"? I'm looking for some places that have good sand, protected waters, yet not hours away from a marina (for fuel), I can do about 45 miles each way with a day or so of play fuel left.

Thanks in advance.

Mushroom Reef fits those easily. Sandy Point if you want to be more remote, but Mushroom is perfect for what you describe.

Thank you QC.

Another question. What would be a source for a good detailed map of the lake? I have Garmin Lakes loaded in my GPS but would like to have a backup paper one just in case. Yeah I know go to the middle and pick a heading, I like more detailed info.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

This company has IMHO the best paper maps. They are coated and do well over the long term. And they are available at most Marinas. Just search for Lake Mead. Very detailed.

Welcome to Fish-n-Map Co. - Producers of freshwater and saltwater fishing maps for structure fishing

That is the BEST map, QC. I have one of those in the boat.

The end user needs to be aware that contours are "Full Pool" and you will need to adjust (subtract) to current lake levels. Some areas on the maps that show H2O are now dry.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Sad morning on Mead today,6/1/13..We were at Heminway marina at around 8:30 this morning when paramedics were on the launch ramp with flashing lights..A few minutes later a boat came in at high speed and we could see they were giving cpr to a person laying in the boat...I heard a few minutes ago that they were diving in Kingman Wash area..He did not make it....Scary sight for sure as we headed out for a day on the lake....
