Joe Have you ever had any dealings or hear about a nike base in worcester Pa. A place I hunt has an old army base on the border of the property. Was always told it was a nike base back in the day. ?????

There are a few circular areas in the fields where the ground has sunk in, like it was dug out and filled in.

Would be kinda cool knowing they had those babies right near my place.

Nope not talking about nuke. "Nike" from what I hear they had these huge missles underground at the ready in case of attack. Supossed to have had them all over the country.

Flathead,
There were close to 300 Nike sites across the contenental US. I don't know about the one you're asking about off hand, But I can look it up for you when I get home. The circular depressions don't indicate a Nike site however, Nike's were stored in a horizonal position. They were raised to the ground that way. Once above ground, they were pushed by hand over a railway to a launcher which would raise them to the near vertical position. That said, I'm sure there were Nike site in PA somewhere. I'll let you know a little later.
-Joe

By the way, Nike Hercules was a Nuclear capable missile.

Flathead,
It turns out that there was a Nike site in Worchester PA. Here is the info on that site:
•
• Site designation PH-91

• Integrated Fire Control area (Radars) located at S Worchester, Church Rd now Worchester Nike Park
• Launcher area located on Berks Rd. Now a US Army Reserve Center; 330th Combat Engineer Battalion.
• The site was originally a Nike Ajax site (Very first guided missile deployed by US).
• Converted to Nike Hercules (Possible Nuke) around 1958-1959
• Deactivated in 1964
• There should be nothing left of the IFC (Radar) area.
• There may be some buildings or other facilities left at the launch site.

My info comes from the book Rings of Supersonic Steel dated 1996. Many changes can occur in seven years.
Does this sound like your area/property?

That is it to a tee. Yes there is still a few buildings there and the base seems to be active but maybe only a couple of cars there on a daily basis.

I hunt right off berks road where the launcher site is. Have spent many of hour sitting with my back resting against the fence to that place shooting doves. Also have arrowed many deer there. Have never heard of nike park  I'll have to look for it on church road.

Wow and to think back in the day a missle could have been launched and flown right over our heads while we sat out in the back yard :D

Thanks Joe :)

Flathead,
You would never have seen one of these birds take off while leaning against that fence. The pressure wave from the launch would have killed anyone within 50 yards who weren't protected. Even if you were further away, it would have been bad news. Nike Hercules was a dooms day device for sure. Imagine a 40 kilo-ton nuclear warhead detonated within 90-100 miles.

The army had a nuclear device called the Davy Crocket! It could be fired from a Jeep! Problem was that you couldnt run fast enough after firing it to get away from the blast!!
