Check out the oil that this Mastercraft manufacture recommends.

Mastercraft

Granted, this is a fuel injected engine.

Pennzoil 15W-40 is a diesel rated oil and I would put it right in there with the Dello400 and the rotella.

TOD,

You may have missing something. I have a petrol marine engine and a diesel in my car.

I will probably use Fuchs 15W-40, dual rated oil.

Again, thanks to all the posters for your advise.

Chris............

Sorry about that Chris, you didn't say the diesel was in an auto. I assumed you had two boats, one with the 6.5L GM marine diesel and the other with the 4.3L gas.

The Pennzoil that Mastercraft recommends is one of the low ash, dual-rated diesel/gas oils. It will have a lower ash content and lower TBN than the Delo 400.

Unless you're trying to split hairs or something, it doesn't really matter. The Pennzoil, Delo, and Rotella are all dual-rated lower-ash automotive diesel oils. The Delo and Rotella are nearly identical in ash content (within .06%), so take your pick there. The Pennzoil has a slightly lower ash content. This is probably why Mastercraft recommends that brand in their gas engine. Gasoline = lower ash. Diesel = higher ash.

Typical gasoline oils are usually in the 0.8% to 0.9% ash content, while some dual rated diesel oils are nearly double that.

Discussing oils is always "Hair splitting". Arguments are always about a .01% of this or that particular additive and parts per million.

Like the Ash content, we are talking a .05% of ash, is this really a "BIG" proplem"? I think not!

Cool,
I was missing those disagreements between donS and trog. I guess yall will take their place. I think thats great it keeps the board exciting. I love to watch experts argue about stuff. They get so nitpicky.
Anyway dude, run the rotella, its a good oil and the .06% ash content will be trivial as long as you dont leave the oil in for years. Change your oil every seaon/100 hours and you will be stellar.
Later,
:) , ;) , ;0

The ash content difference between gasoline oils and diesel oils is not .05%. It can be as much as 1%. This difference is monumental, and could mean the difference between ruining an engine or not.

Please re-read my last post. The small difference in ash content that member LubeDude is splitting hairs over is between the Rotella and Delo diesel oils. Both are diesel oils.

As I said, these dual rated diesel oils can have as much as double the ash content of gasoline oils. That is considerable, and one of the main reasons why the two oil applications are separated. There is nothing to argue.

I change oil and filter every 50 hours. Which for me is usually about 6 months.

Re: Calling LD, re: an oil question.

My take on the sulfated ash issue is that it appears that you cannot have your cake and eat it too. In otherwords, you cant have a robust additive package and a low ash content at the same time. Personnaly, I will take the add pack!

Here is an example. My wife drives an 87 RX/7, rotary engine. It injects a little oil into the combustion area to lube the rotors. I had trouble with the regular oils causing severe carbon buildup. When I went to Dello 400 15W-40 I have not had any issues with carbon at all. I attribute it to the very high detergent in the diesel oil. You would think that I would have more trouble with the ash being so high. maybe a high ash content dosnt relate to carbon build up.
