My intermittent starting spark was tracked to a failed stator (blk/yel lead open between gnd and also between blk/wht & blk/yel) in my 1986 Merc 20 outboard (although, by the schematic I have, this indicates the high speed coil has failed - can someone shed some light on this?). Since I had equipment out, I checked the 339-832757A4 coils also, and they seem a little on the weak side (I also noted an internal clicking - shorting? - in the each of the coils before it would produce a 5mm arc on the tester. Is this a sign of a coil going bad?).

If the coils are weak or internally arcing/shorting, could this cause the stator to fail?

Thanks all....
