Sorry if that is a stupid question guys but I just bought a boat and dont have a trailer yet and I can get the boat in water I was just wondering if I could put it in neutral and start it just to see if it will run.

you have to put a set of muffs on before you start the motor. If you start it without water you will destroy the engine.

This is a set of muffs also know as a flusher, this allows you to hook up a garden hose to supply water to the impeller which cools the engine. Without water the impeller or water pump runs dry, the rubber breaks down and no water to cool engine, engine overheats and boom....

Do yourself a favor and buy the manual for your outboard.

You could also put the lower end into a clean container (I use a new Trash Can) and run it in that. Do not run it dry
