well i jumped in and made the purchase. I'm really impressed with the shape this old boat is in. a 34 yo boat looks like its only a year old. trailer on great condition no rust anywhere. motor cranks right up and runs surprisingly smooth. pees good. going to give it a little tune up. plugs foot oil and greased. do a little research and buy a service manual. the take it for a test drive the first fairly warm day. :)

Since it's not a electric shift.. It doesn't have to be special lube..Lower gear unit lube will work..
My Johnson (near the samething) liked the champion plugs... They was weird looking suckers and kinda a pain to come by till I found a set at wal mart on the back shelf... lucky day... Try NAPA they carry hard to find stuff... Champion and NGK use to have a plug look up tool on their website...
Here is a pic of those funky plugs

I'd be curious how your test run works out on the water. Assuming that goes well, it looks like you got a nice boat for the money. Time will tell. Good luck with her.

Look like a score to me.. Floater and a runner... What did ya give $1400... Be killer for fishing... Mine didn't have power trim either and I think ran best third hole from the transom.. It's kinda trial and error to figure out the sweet spot... Don't drop the pin in the water:facepalm:

Very nice find. if I remember right there was a modification of the tell tale hose routing so it made a complete loop so water did not drain See this post for the modification (found it :D) http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=222677&page=1

That set up you have is actually very well matched...... you will not need a trim adjustment.

The gap you pointed out can be filled but not with silicone but with a 3m4000 sealant (silicone will fail).

The vent between the Live wells (if they are true plumbed in livewells) will (should) provide you access to the plumbing. The overall condition shows the boat was well cared for.

Let us know about the water test results.

BTW I think there is a electric trim for that motor... I saw one... It would make it nice but ya can live without it.. If ya got a chance to snag it off a old blown up engine(should be tons of them) I would grab it and install it.. You might have to rig it, but still would be cool... That looks like a aftermarket CDI pack??? Not real sure.. but that's good if it is ,since they make em better than OEM

if you can't get the trim for the motor there is a cmc tilt plate. i plan on getting one of those. 50hp isn't the funnest thing to lift up when your leaning over a 4' splash well.

Good score man. I new when he said his bottom was probably 1400 that he would take less. I love how the wife closed the deal. Funny stuff. Enjoy your new boat. Be careful on that first run.

no doubt.. Take wake head on and the more speed the harder it hits.. Tri hulls are unforgiving in that category... I tried to always hit head on and I would get out of it before I hit it.. Will make ya a good capt.

Re: can anyone give me some advice on this one?

These may have been the best motors ever built. I have only one caution for a rookie. Each cylinder is individualy fed by a seperate carburator. If a jet clogs in one of the carbs, it not only restricts the gas for power, but the oil in the gas for lubrication. Many of these motors have thus burned a cylinder and rod. Be careful if the power suddenly drops. It's a sure sign of a clogged jet.

Limp back to the ramp at idle, or get a tow and have the carbs cleaned! I love these motors and this is there main problem. On other motors carbs feed multiple cylinders so a clogged jet is much more noticable. Folks just think, "I'll keep the Hammer-Down and it will clear" It doesn't.

Preventive maintenance in our days of low quality fuel is the answer. The best idea would be to clean the carbs prior to the maiden voyage!!
