can anyone give some info on starters

Ok thanks for reading. My question is can i use a automotive starter on my 1985 omc gm 3.0 liter. The problem is that on my last run of the year mine died and is shot but i still need to flush and winterize. So before anyone says it i will not run a auto trpye starter during the season , its just to get ready for winter and being out of work right know i do not have a couple of hundred for a marine starter. If i can what would i look for . I am thinking a salvage yard trip. One more thing what is the metric sigh on my marine starter . Is it different than auto. Thanks

No, they are not ignition protected. Which means it could cause an explosion and fire should you get a fuel leak of some sort.

Thanks for the reply. I relize that they are a no no but i only want to use it to winterize and the engine cover would be open. Then inthe spring or over the winter i will put the correct starter in. Again this is just to winterize

thanks for the web site . i thought they would be a whole lot more money. one question i do have is , that on the web site it says it will not replace the older larger starter 10MT, being that i am a 1985 which one do you think i would have or is it marked somewhere on it . just out of curisity nobody said if the outo starter would work

the auto starter will work if by working you mean starting the engine. it's still not safe, just went through this myself. i was at the beach and my starter took a dump on me. it was a saturday and i could not find one place that could sell me a marine starter. i went to the auto parts store and bought a starter for a '99 suburban and installed that temporarily. i made sure there were no fumes or anything like that before starting, it worked fine. many people use car starters in their boats for years but it only takes one explosion to stop you from doing it again.

once i returned from the beach i got the proper marine starter and installed it before using the boat again. bottom line, it will start the engine but it's not safe.
