Hi,

Is the starter motor turning when you engage? If so, is the pinion free to move up and down the shaft?

If the starter motor is not turning, check for voltage on the starter side of the solenoid.

You have to have a darn good battery and the battery connections have to be cleaned and tight

65 HP "four stroke"? Don't think so! Dead battery, loose battery cables, corroded battery cables, and the very last thing to even think about is a starter. Troubleshoot and isolate before popping for a new/rebuilt starter.

If the starter is spinning but not moving up to engage the flywheel then try lubricating the bendix. Pull up and turn on the starter gear and spray some lubricant (wd-40 works).

when i turn it over you can hear the cylinoid clicks once and then nothing the starter dont do anything and the shaft is clear nothing blocking it if i keep trying it will try and engage once every 25 trys or so but thats it i have checked all the connections and everything looks good .... ive tried everything i can think of and starter is the last thing to do

You have a loose or shorted wire somewhere...If it won't engage when you jump directly to the starter then you have a grounding issue. If the starter engages even once out of 25 attempts then surely you have a bad connection.

And I think you mean 4 cylinder not 4 stroke. There was never a 65hp 4-stroke built by mercury/mariner or anyone else in the 60s or 70s.

Cheers!

Re: Can anyone help??

Have you tried putting jumper leads straight to the starter, I had the same problem, one of my battery leads was coroded internaly therefore a bad earth connection, also swap the battery with a known good one it does not take long for a battery with a crook cell to lose it's power.

Re: Can anyone help??

My last two boats had intermittent starter problems and all connections looked good. On both it was where the battery cable was connected to the battery connector. Corrosion got into the crimp itself. It would read 12v, but not enough amperage for the starter.I cut off battery connector and soldered on a new end loop. Haven't had any problems since..
