a couple of questions

1 can anyone id the year or year range of this power head?
2 will it bolt up to my 1989 motor leg?
3 shouldn't any 85 to 150 power head base gasket work on it, regardless of the million different serial numbers force uses?

I did a powerhead swap from an 89 to an 86. The 86 looks exactly as the one you have posted. Are there any tags with the serial number?

Since the engine has the alternator stator mount for a Prestolite ignition, the powerhead can be anywhere from 1979 Chrysler to 1985 Force. After 1985, Force engines became black.

The overheat switch usually screws in beside the center spark plug. In your engine, there is a hole at the top plug so that is where you would screw in the bimetal switch. It is a 1/4 X 20 screw with a 5/8 hex head on top of which is glued the cylindrical bimetal switch. This switch can have a small threaded stud or a tapped flat prong to which you attach the orange wire.

Yes, Any base gasket will work, and the power head will bolt up to almost any pre-Mercury 3 or 4 cylinder midleg from the early 1960s up until the mid 1990s

Looks like a 70's powerhead. If it is, the block is taller than the 89 block and your 89 ignition won't fit without modification. I put a 1975 85hp powerhead on my 1989 lower, and it works great. However, if you plan on swapping the newer ignition over, you WILL need to be mechanically inclined. I posted a thread of my conversion in 2011 I think, you can do a search for it as I can't seem to find it. Here is a link of it running.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xX0HVpJSkks

No Title

Here is the powerhead before they stripped it down and removed it from the leg. The only visual difference between it and my 89 are the color of the coils nd ignition and the location of the thermo switch.

No pic. Anyway the coils on my fried engine are blue and the coils and ignition that were on the new powerhead are black.

The difference in blue and black is the color.
They are the same inside. The black is newer.
There should be a foundry mark on the top cylinder on the fuel pump side, it's round and raised letter.
