At end of my rope...ready to trash this motor. I have changed almost everything on this motor except the stator and timer base. I am SURE I have good clean fuel to all 4 carbs and the jets are all clear. I have replaced the VRO fuel pump. I replaced powerpack, plugs, wires, and coils. Took the boat out the other day and it started and idled fine and ran perfect for about 15 seconds and then...... bogged down and killed. I could barely get her started and then she would run good for couple seconds then bog down. Then as soon as I put it in gear it would kill. I DONT KNOW WHATS THE DEAL with this motor??? Only ignition component I have not changed is timer base and stator. Anyway, finally she wouldnt start at all and now I have no spark at all. So I dont know whats goin on. Now I think I have ignition switch issue or lanyard. But what is the MAIN problem on this motor?? Can it be a bad stator or timerbase??? The weather is finally getting perfect for fall fishing and I have broken motor. Thanks for any reply.

Sorry I forgot its a 1988 140 johnson vro. Runs perfect when it runs, but only for 10 seconds.

Will someone please answer this question and help this man? I see more posts go unanswered or lack of info. Feels like I am reading a freaking SELOC Manual 90% of the time!

How much charge does your battery currently have could be the reason you are no longer getting spark if it is two week the starter will not flywheel fast enough for you to get a spark . also how tight is the primer bulb for the fuel?
seems odd that it ran fine for 15 seconds then died i know you recently replaced your fuel pump but try squeezing the bulb when it starts to bog down and see if it makes a difference from what i can see it has to be either spark issue or fuel delivery

Thanks for the reply. Im pretty sure its not fuel even though it sounds like it. Now I am getting intermittent spark. Sometimes it sparks and sometimes not. I dont think its the power pack, coils, or ignition/ kill switch. Also my battery is fine and I even put a 100 amp battery jump starter on to test and still getting intermediate spark. Dont think its the rectifier either.I have to say stator or timer base but not sure.

Broken wire somewhere? Corroded connection in stator base? Likely not a timer base, you'd still run, just lousy without timing.

hmm normally intermittent spark at all cables will turn into intermittent spark at one plug when it reaches running temp but i guess that's hard to do if it doesn't run long enough so now i'm thinking stator as well maybe loose or corroded connection there?

If you check it when it "dies" and you have no spark its either a stator or timer base. Disconnect the rectifier and retest ,if spark come back the rectifier is bad causing the stator to overheat and fail. The loopers are bad about timer bases..you can ohm it with a meter(Wht to Bl/Pur/Grn/Pk) and all should read within 1-2 ohms of each other(spec is 35-45 ohms) you can also test charge coils(Brown to
Brown/yellow) and should read 450-700 ohms..
