Can I anchor in this channel?

Hi all,
What is the etiquette or what are the rules on anchoring in a channel in the Chesapeake Bay? I live across the street from a channel and can see the water but have no direct access, see pic below. So I always have to trailer the boat and it's a 30 minute boat ride from the ramp to get back to this spot. Therefore it would be nice to just anchor it there on weekends and then use a sup board from a closeby public dock to get to it. I always thought it was not permitted but saw this sail boat anchor there today and leave, so I wonder if he is just risking it or if he is actually allowed to do it. What if not? Would they tow the boat or 'just' mail a fine and how much would a violation cost? What about theft? Anyone have any experiences on this topic? Thanks.

Unless someone comes along with hard info, I would suggest contacting the USCG. They will be able to tell you without a doubt what you can and cannot do. For Chesapeake Bay you have Annapolis, MD and Cape Charles, VA

Perhaps at least get on speaking terms with one or two of the dock owners. Who knows, a six pack may get them to let you tie up?

There is also a bit of a difference between 'let's drop the hook here while we have a sandwich, then get going again', and leaving a boat unattended overnight or longer.
