Can I make a gasket from a fel-pro gasket?

I was brain storming... I need to order a gasket for the t-stat housing for my 74' Johnson 6hp. Trying to save some money on freight. Could I just take a felpro gasket about the same thickness and cut one out to fit? I've got plenty left from a rebuild on a 400 sb chevy. Is this possible if I cut it perfect and put the holes where they belong???

I've done it lots of times. xacto knives and a simple hole punch and NAPA gasket material. Not sure if it is "approved" but I've never had a problem with one, FWIW.

Get gasket material the thickness you need, hold it over the surface you are going cover and tap lightly with a wood hammer to make the imprint.

I buy sheets of different thickness gasket material, and cut/punch my own out...for the last 50 years..

Use a small ball pean (sp?) hammer to tap lightly to get the shape of the new gasket. It works well.

Yup, some Vellum gasket material, hole punch set, synthetic cutting board and Xacto knife......perfect gaskets. I've made too many to count.
