Can I manually start 1967 V4 60hp Evinrude?

There are notches on the edge of the flywheel that are just right for a bit of rope, but I fear that if even I actually got it to fire the rope wouldn't disengage and I'd get my arm pulled into it or suffer some other disaster with the rope flapping around. Anyone ever done it, or is there another way of starting it manually in an emergency?

Get pulled really fast then throw it into gear. Na, that won't work.<br /><br />After the motor is warmed up, and if it's all tuned up perfect it would rope start, PROBABLY.

Tinkerer.... They are designed to be rope started in an emergency.<br /><br />With ignition in the OFF position, pump the fuel primer bulb until it's hard. Apply a slight bit of throttle (SLIGHT!). Engage manual choke. Crank engine through with the rope 4 or 5 times to get the fuel up to the pistons. Disengage manual choke.<br /><br />Double check to make sure that engine IS NOT in gear, and the throttle is not increased excessively. With the ignition ON, get the slack out of the rope, then crank the engine with the rope in a quick constant pulling motion with no hesitation until the rope is clear.

The slots for are angled so the rope end is released. It's not that hard if the engine wants to start, but a big V4 will wear you out quick if it's out of tune.

You could also try spraying a LITTLE gas into the carbs before pulling begins.

Thanks all, especially Joe Reeves.<br /><br />Had tried it without ignition on and turned and released OK, but I was a bit worried that the flywheel was a common part with something of lower power and that it wasn't intended to allow a rope start and mightn't work as well and be dangerous if I actually started it.

If I can manually (rope) start my '83 Johnson 235 , then anyone of moderatley good health and strength, SHOULD be able to start your V4 (provided all that is wrong is the starter/battery power, and not some other IMPORTANT item, like fouled plugs, or lack of fuel, etc...)<br /><br />Personal experience... PURE stupidity caused ... AND I will NEVER again, leave something like a small refrigerator (which according to the sales literature supposedly only uses "1 to 2 amp hours") plugged in over-night ... Even if I was able to do the identical thing with my Pickup, two days before leaving for a week of fishing... She started, on the first pull, but I NEVER want to have to do that again !!!

ob1, that has to be one of the all time oh FOCK moments, when a giant honker like that pulls a click when you twist the key ... ugh, I would have prolly just hit the SEATOW button on my celphone, lol, I would never have imagined something like that could be rope started, thats like using a model T crank on a 500 Caddy engine!
