I am working on a lower unit for a friend,(1998 Rude 50 hp) and the oil was pretty crude looking. I am putting all new seals in,but I want to rinse it out, am I safe to rinse it with kerosene.

You would probably be ok if you have a way to blow out all residue and shoot all the bearings with fresh gear lube afterwards. If the oil was really bad, why not just disassemble the whole gear case, clean all the parts and reassemble.....your going to to have all the seals out any way.

I dont think I would use kerosene go to your local auto parts and look at a product I think is spelled RISTONE it is made for aplications like yours and is not supposed to harm bearings or gears and if you do not get it completely out it will not harm lower unit. good luck
