can i swap my outdrive to another boat?

hi, i have an '89 maxum w/ a 3.0 mercruiser with an alpha1 outdrive. I am considering buying a 1993 Maxum with the same mercruiser engine, but missing the outdrive.. would my '89 outdrive work with a '93 mercruiser system keeping in mind the 4 year difference? would i run into any problems? In case you were wondering i'm looking to do this because the floor in my boat is rotting away, so instead of throwing money away on replacing, i'd rather buy a great condition boat that i can get a good deal on...well, thanks in advance..<br />Jamie

If the new boat is a Gen II alpha you may have to change the upper shift shaft

Generation 1&2 are not compatible.....I would try to sell the old drive on ebay & put that money into a new aftermarket drive ...JK

yea, i hear theres way too much involved to combine a generation 1&2... so, does anyone know for sure if they started using the generation 2's in 1993 0r 94 ?? this guy i'm looking to buy the boat off is cluess and no help..

They started the Gen II in 91.

You can buy an after-market drive for about $1300. You should be able to get at least half of that by selling your present drive....Keep the engine & what ever else you can scavange off the junk boat.....JK
