can I test a motor laying down?

I just purchased a evinrude 225 vro and wanted to test it but I cant currently get the help to stand it . Would it hurt anything to test it laying down on a pallet?????

You mean run it ... no way! It needs to be vertical and mounted on a test stand or a boat.

I got super cheap and wanted to ebay it because its too heavy for my boat. With the profits I was gonna replace my 70 hp with a 115 hp. so you dont think I can just try to start it and let it idle for a minute ?

I mean a float type carb is made to work right side up. You try to pump fuel to that engine lying down, all you are going to get is a nasty surprise. Have you ever seen Jim Carey in his roll as Firefighter Bill?

Good point ------- I am not a real engine person . I am just starting to understand engines , infact I just did learn how to replace a water pump . <br />Besides if you could buy a 1989 225 running (electrical bug) for $170 and sell it for over 1,000 wouldnt you? I just wanted to run it myself before hand.

Tash - its winter and things go cheap at local auctions on cold windy days. Besides knowing the auctioneer doesnt hurt.

As long as you tell that it has a problem, and you sell it on ebay for a lot of money, I will give you a high five. I would do exactly the same thing if I was in your position. Plus, who knows you could find out that one litte wire was loose or something after you get the motor running. You will need two additional people there besides yourself: One with a video camera and another with a fire extinguisher. I just gotta see what a big ol 225 V6 looks like rolling and hopping all over the place when/if it fires up. And if it does start, there is a chance that the fuel getting pumped out of the carbs will ignite. Then the 'muffs will come off the hose will be shooting water all over as the big fireball of a v6 torque rolls itsself down your driveway.<br /><br />Yep, that has real potential for "Americas Funniest Home Videos". So don't miss out and forget the video camera.<br /><br /><br />I fired up a V8 sitting between two logs once. But that is a story for another forum.

ROBBY- I am not scamming anyone . I will sell it with all the same info ive posted here and sell it for parts or repair as-is , untested - and I will discribe everthing I know and not bend the truth . No my feedback isnt 100% but I think 99.8% is close enough!

You need to see if you can get that motor upright on a very sturdy support, then you'll be in a better position to test the motor, the more info you can provide as to the motors condition the greater the profit potential

MCM - i AGREE a working motor bring much more $$. I tried to work a deal with a guy I know to test it for me and I would sell some items for him for free on ebay but I havent gotten a answer yet.

As far as standing the motor you could rent an automotive engine hoist, but you'll still need some thing to mount it to. The motor is equipped with lift brackets for this purpose, its gotta weigh about 300 lbs (just a guess).

300 Lbs sound light - seemed much heavier trying to unload it! You know I looked for those brackets which ive seen on my small 70 hp and all I found was where they use to be . Looks like they have been removed? I was originaly going to use those to hold it from a tree while I built a stand .

Like I said just a guess, probably weighs much more than that. My point was you need a hoist to move it around. Might have to locate those brackets or you could advertise it as untested, condition unkown

bEcause of my work load and the fact I need some xmas cash Im gonna sell it "as-is untested for parts or repair only" -I wish my boat could handle this motor however I dont think I can go pass a 140 hp.
