I tow a 4000lb+ boat with my 2wd 07 CC 1500 Sierra 5.3 w/3.42s and G80 with no problem. Krept up the ramp without spin. You won't have a problem.

A point a lot of people miss when considering a two wheel drive tow vehicle. Don't cheap out on tires, get tires that have high wet weather traction ratings. I know a lot of BFG tires for instance are great off road, but suck big time when the pavement get's wet. A good set of tires will keep you from wishing for that 4x4, and think of the fuel you'll save. :D

That said, living in the great white north, my truck has 4x4, but I've not had to use it yet (for launching/retrieving that is). :p

You should have no problem towing with a ? ton 2wd truck.

It?s the old 2wd-vs-4wd truck controversy

2wd trucks are what built this country; it was not until the late 1960s that 4wd was a factory option. Before that everything was done in 2wd trucks.

Contrary to popular belief it was for this reason (2wd) the Warn bumper mounted winch was invented. As the 4wd popularity grew in the early 1970s the Warn Bumper winch carried over.

I am not saying you need a bumper winch, I am saying that I have seen a lot of 2wd trucks in places that was tough going for 4wd trucks.

As was stated earlier, I am firm believer the right tires for your needs make all the difference.

Took the boat out last weekend and went on some really steep ramps and had back tires in water and didnt have no spins had no problems at all. So if your thinking about getting a rwd truck go for it just make sure it has the G80 Sensor. Thanks to all who replied.

G80 isnt a sensor, its the rear locking diff. Stands for 'Government model 1980'.

It was developed by the military and installed in the GM military trucks (like those cool old K5 6.2 diesel Blazers)

I have a 2002 Silverado LT package (loaded to the gills) with the 5.3. It has 190K miles and still looks, drives and feels like it was new.

Ive been dropping/retrieving boats for almost 200K on all kinds of ramps from lake to river to waterway ramps. There are a few times that the locking diff kicked in but its always pulled my boats out with out a problem.

Keep this in mind on the rear locking diff. The G80 is a TRUE locker. It will engage, lock both tires together and will not release until the stress from traction equalizes.

Here is the downside to the locking diff. Yes when it locks you double your traction BUT, you also loose your side holding ability. An open diff, one tire spins and the other sits still. That tire sitting still is what keeps your truck from fishtailing. When both tires are spinning you are more likely to get sideways. So watch locking the diff on side hills.

ALSO! the G80 works on centrifugal force (spinning force of the carrier in the axle housing) A built in safety device prevents the locker from locking if its spinning too fast. So if one tire starts to spin and you floor it, it will NOT lock. If one tire is spinning, ease on the throttle and feather it a bit, keeping that tire from spinning too fast, that will allow the other to lock up and spin too. If this safety device wasnt included on the G80, and it locked up with one tire spinning way fast, it would grenade the rear diff.
