Re: Can I tow with a 2xd truck 07silvardo1500
G80 isnt a sensor, its the rear locking diff. Stands for 'Government model 1980'.
It was developed by the military and installed in the GM military trucks (like those cool old K5 6.2 diesel Blazers)
I have a 2002 Silverado LT package (loaded to the gills) with the 5.3. It has 190K miles and still looks, drives and feels like it was new.
Ive been dropping/retrieving boats for almost 200K on all kinds of ramps from lake to river to waterway ramps. There are a few times that the locking diff kicked in but its always pulled my boats out with out a problem.
Keep this in mind on the rear locking diff. The G80 is a TRUE locker. It will engage, lock both tires together and will not release until the stress from traction equalizes.
Here is the downside to the locking diff. Yes when it locks you double your traction BUT, you also loose your side holding ability. An open diff, one tire spins and the other sits still. That tire sitting still is what keeps your truck from fishtailing. When both tires are spinning you are more likely to get sideways. So watch locking the diff on side hills.
ALSO! the G80 works on centrifugal force (spinning force of the carrier in the axle housing) A built in safety device prevents the locker from locking if its spinning too fast. So if one tire starts to spin and you floor it, it will NOT lock. If one tire is spinning, ease on the throttle and feather it a bit, keeping that tire from spinning too fast, that will allow the other to lock up and spin too. If this safety device wasnt included on the G80, and it locked up with one tire spinning way fast, it would grenade the rear diff.
