Can I use Big Box valve for gasoline.

Last night I went to switch over to my built in tank on the boat. The inline valve I have that is used to prevent the fuel from coming out of the built in tank when not in use was stuck. I worked it a little and it broke free. Well the spline broke free from the valve so it is stuck in the off position. Today I went out to get a new valve and all the local stores only had three way valves. I only need a shut off valve. I went to HD and in the plumbing section they had a 3/8's threaded brass valve. Its says it can be used for water, oil, or air. Can I use this valve until I can get my hands on a proper valve? Will i need to get my hands on a proper valve or will that one be fine?

I wouldn't. The inside of those ball valves have a nylon/poly sleeve that sits around the ball itself. I'd imagine that nylon/polyurethane sleeve would not fare well with petroleum. Normally plumbing ball valves are a lot of times "WOG" valves - Water or Gas, gas being natural gas, propane, etc. Maybe I'm way off, but I wouldn't do it. Unless the manufacturer specifically states "for petroleum".

EDIT: err.. Unless you're referring to the 3/8 - 1/2" gas shutoff valves, which may lack the nylon/poly. But I still wouldn't do it (unless otherwise stated on product that its ok.)

you COULD use the 3 way valve for a temp or even permanent fix... just block off the extra port.
