Can I use this coil with my points?

Hey Everyone :) Been playing around with my new to me boat and found out that I need to replace the coil & points. I have already picked up a set of points and condenser. Now I need to get myself a coil. I was wondering if I went with one of the PerTronix 40611 Flame-Thrower 40,000 Volt 3.0 ohm Coils would I need to upgrade the points? Or can I use the stock ones?

The motor is 1968 Mercruiser 120 I/O

Thanks in advance :)

Got pretty hot because my father in law said it was ok to jump a wire direct to the coil when I found out I need only have 9.6 volts? there through the external ballast? No spark now either..... So I figured I would get all new. Points, condenser, and coil.

Ayuh,... There's probably nothin' wrong with yer coil,...

The Points, fire the coil,....

Anyways, don't go wastin' money on anything but a stock Oem type coil, as that's all ya need,.....

There's No benefit what so ever, to a fancy coil,... None, Nada, Zip, Zero,....

What would happen if I did jump the gun and already bought the aftermarket coil? :( I know I should of did some more research.. Will it wreck anything by using it? I understood that it has internal ballasts instead of my boat that has them external. Would that be the only difference? Should I be ok to use PerTronix 40611?

I hope so..

Thanks

With the 3 ohm Petronix I believe you would want to unplug the purple resistance wire coming from the electric choke, and run a stranded copper wire in its place to feed 12v to the coil. You may want to check with Petronix.

Yep got the ok from Tech Support :) Remove the wire with the resistor and replace with 14 AWG wire and all set :) That's good news. I'm not getting spark but I think I found out why.... :(

Wire is completely cracked and corroded.. I plan to go over all the wires and make sure they are cleaned up where needed and replaced.

Coils are the most replaced parts when there is nothing wrong with it. I would replace the point before the coil. You can test it by grounding the coil and having the wire to it to the side. When you remove the ground if it sparks you know it is ok.

Good to know thumpar. I will do that for sure.. I hope to get out this weekend and also go over all the wires and make sure they are all cleaned up.... It did sit for 7 years so there is corosion in the wires. I got lot's of new wire and ends so I should be ok with that.

Another question. Since my gauges are very old and corroded, can I just wire up the new ignition switch up front and will I be able to start it with everything else disconnected up front? I plan to put in new gauges in the near future. Do I need anything else hooked up into the wire harness up front to allow the engine to fire?

And using that precious gem of advise.... Many years ago, about 2004 I would guess, my previous engine ('94 4.3LX) was misbehaving. Misfiring and backfiring... Checked everything (except the coil, 'cause coils rarely fail), replaced the spark plugs and all fixed, for about 4 hours, then she starts up again. Started suspecting I had dodgy plugs. Nope, perfect. EVENTUALLY pulled the coil out as I was desperate and it was the ONLY thing left. Sure enough, tiny little corrosion hole on the bottom. All the oil had leaked out and it was overheating.... New coil, all fixed....

Just thought I'd share... :)

(BTW, I actually agree with Thumpar, coils are so over-replaced!)

Chris.....
