The model/serial number should be on the transom clamp on a sticker or on a silver core plug, about the size of a quarter, on the power head.

That is the serial number. The "M" stands for OMC.
If it is really a 2002 Johnson 50hp, then the model number would be J50PL4SNF if it is a 4-stroke, and J50PLSNF if it is a 2-stroke

Anyone know what that number on that plug is? Or can help me find the vin on this motor?

There is no VIN for an outboard. There is only the serial number, and the serial number for your motor is 4864328.

Years ago, if you had the serial number, you could call the manufacturer and they could give you the year using the serial number. Might be worth a try.

Re: can not find vin?

call Evinrude customer service with the disc number. I did and they were able to tell me my model # from that. Dealers could not help me. Best of luck. Rick.

By the way - that "M" on all your parts is actually an OMC casting logo - you'll note that it is an M inside of a circle - stands for Outboard Marine...
