I want to replace the trigger and the flywheel part that is right above the trigger is pessed on.. I used a stering wheel puller, and it is not even moving at all.. Any tips to get it off? I gave it some taps with the rubber hammer, but didnt help!!! Soo i had to put it all back together!!! Now the tach works somtimes!!! Does the tach run from the trigger? or did i screw somthing up putting it back together?

do yourself a favor and invest in a flywheel puler, never attemp to use a puller thaqt pulls from the outer edge, a universal flywheen puller has the 3 slots that you screw down into the flywheel while you have a main bolt that you tighten until the flywheel pops off

Re: Can not get flywheel off!!!

If the bolt hole in the center of the flywheel has internal threads, there's a special flywheel puller that threads into it, and presses on the crank to force the flywheel off. Don't do it any other way, it'll just wreck things.

Tach runs off the stator, and the charging system has to be in good shape for it to work. You may have a bad ground (mounting) on the rectifier.

It would help if we knew what engine you are working on.

hope it helps

Sorry, Its a 87 merc 115.. I just saw some old posts.. I think it does have threads inside!! I saw you cheap ones on ebay $30.-$40.. What you think of getting one of those ?

The RPM worked fine till i pulled everything....The timeing wouldnt have anything to do with it not working? Would it?

Please pay attention. The stator provides power to the battery charging system, and to the switchboxes through 3 sets of coils. The battery charging set is what supplies the AC to the tach. The trigger provides timing, period.

Pay attention when you buy one off eBay. You need one with a fine thread bolt through it. The course one makes it very difficult to get a tight flywheel. The fine thread ones usually are not also an engine lift, but they can be converted by opening up the hole to clear the flywheel nut, and using a shorter bolt and an angled lift lug.

Yes, the 115 has a threaded flywheel hub. It also probably has a 16 amp stator, with a ring of 6 bolts on top. If you put a jawed puller on that, you likely wrecked it, and it may be hitting the stator causing the symptoms you see. You may have warped it so it dropped some of the bonded magnets.

Getting an education by reading and asking questions is one heck of a lot cheaper than getting an education by experience. Get an engine maintainance manual, peferably a genuine Mercury, and read it.

hope it helps
