Starters can be had on Ebay but as mentioned they can be pricey.

Re: can rope start convert to electric start

you need to figure out what you need to add the starter. controller, wiring harness. battery cables, battery, mounting brackets. correct starter.

Re: can rope start convert to electric start

I just did that conversion on a 9.9. Not sure what similarities or differences there are but if you do some homework you can figure it out. I found two sites very useful for tracking down compatibility of parts across different years. They are
http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E
here you can use the 'where used' search feature
and

here they list old and superceded p/n's under the p/n heading. Very useful since OMC often changed p/n but did not actually change the part.

In general I found that many parts were compatible from a wide range of years. I had to replace the flywheel, add a starter motor and starter mounting bracket, add a charge coil to charge the battery, add a starter button and a neutral start switch and bracket. Of course I needed a battery and cables as well.

You will also need a starter solenoid (I didn't with the small 9.9). Check to see if your flywheel has two sets of teeth on it. Some came equiped with both, other did not. If there is only one set of teeth then you will need a new flywheel.

Found all my parts off e-bay for a fraction of the cost to buy new (example starter motor $15 + $35 for new end cap & brush assy vs $150 new). It took me about 3 months of searching but I found everything I needed and it cost me about $300 in parts and about 8 hours in time (on and off over a couple months) to complete the conversion. A kit is also available from BRP that includes everything you need for about $900.

Good luck.

MoodyBlue...please no links to commercial sites. The BRP site is OK since it does not sell. You can refer to a commercial site but no links please. Thanks...OBJ.

Make sure to check your flywheel for the ringgear so the starter can ingage and spin the fly wheel
