if it is indeed a QD-12 then is does not have the spring and detent arrangment. It's a standard gearcase same as the 5.5 or 7.5. I've got one out in the garage. The only difference is the shift rod and the way the shift linkage unhooks.

Actually, if it's a QD-12, it has the earlier 4-bolt lower unit that is shared with the 1954 & prior 12s & 15s. COMPLETELY different unit from the 5.5 & 7.5 4-bolt units. They added the rear fifth bolt in 1955 on the mid-sized twins.

Well, if this is the case, then there's no wonder why it's popping out of gear. That old front shifter on the QD was quickly replaced with the side shifter in 54 had less issues. These type tend to get pretty sloppy over time.
