Can someone explain "Weedless"?

Can somebody tell me what exactly the OMC weedless lower units are all about? I can see that the prop is angled downward, more than 90 degrees. Does it really foul less than the standard lower unit, and is there more to it? The old ads say you can "go over rocks and shallows", which I'm sure is mostly hype, but I'm curious about what the engineers had in mind.
Thanks!

Hi Phantom,
Having used both the right-angle drive and the "weedless" units quite a bit, I can vouch that you'll get fewer weeds with the "weedless", but it is certainly not problem free. It will bounce over shallows easier, too - I wouldn't recommend it as a practice, though. They made the unit for close to 50 years in one form or another - it was the brainchild of Finn T. Irgens, an engineer with OMC in the 1930s - so there must have been something to it...
- Scott

Thanks, ChineWalker! Glad to know it works, sort of. I think I'll take your advice and not test it out, at least intentionally!
Once again, I learn something new on iBoats!
