Can the Fuel Line Connection keep my motor from running?

I have a 2000 Yamaha 4 Stroke 9.9hp Outboard, it will not start/idle it will run if i pump the accelerator pump but as soon as I let go it shuts off. I was looking at it tonight and pulled the fuel line to inspect the connection when I noticed on the motor side of the connection it appears it is missing the little pin that normally sticks out the end of it, what is it's purpose, is it neccesary for the engine to run. The only reason I question whether or not it is needed is because on my 90hp Johnson the fuel line connects directly to the fuel pump, it does not have the quick disconnect. so I guess my question is will this quick disconnect have any effect on the motors ability to run properly? like I said it seems to be getting gas because if I hold the rod to above an idle it will run but as soon as I even start to let go of the rod it shuts off. this is very confusing to me by the way the carbs have been rebuilt 2 times in the last 2 weeks by 2 different people with the same results. any help would be greatly appreciated. help help help!:confused::confused:

the fuel line connector is a convenience for removing the motor but a potential source of trouble if it leaks fuel or air into the fuel due to a malfunction. you may want to replace your connector since it sounds like your fuel line is "sucking air" into your system. you probably use your connector when you install and remove your motor from the transom and it may have some wear on it. It is possible to eliminate the connector entirely, but you would be giving up the convenience when you remove your motor.
Good Luck!

I am not sure of the exact function of the little pin you are referring to, but I suspect the check ball/valve at the end of the fuel line is not being pushed in far enough, and your fuel flow is being restricted. But I?m not sure that would cause the symptoms you are having because you say it will not idle and it runs good above idle. I am not familiar with the newer Yamahas; hopefully somebody with more experience with them will chime in for you. Good Luck

I would be surprised if it was the primer bulb, but anything is possible. I suspect your problem is a carburetor adjustment issue.
