Hi, I was going to do a carb rebuild on a 2 bbl rochester carb for a 140 4 cylinder inboard. The motor is around a 1984. I was wanting to know if you can buy a electric choke conversion. I would like to change it out. Thanks for any help. Also, is it worth getting rid of the points and condenser, to go with a pertronix electronic conversion for the distributer. Thanks for any help

I've tried on a couple of them with no luck. If you really want to convert, get a new carb for a newer model 3.0L with an electric choke.

As far as the Pertronix, you can buy a lot of points and condensers for the price of the kit. Are you planning on keeping that boat for a long time, or upgrading later on?

I would like to buy a newer boat, but I think i will be keeping this one for awhile. I'm having a lot of issues starting. Maybe I should just go with the carb kit for now. Like you said points are cheap nd they worked fine all these years.

Found this thread on the exact subject I was going to post on. Don, can you explain what issues you ran into? I was thinking of replacing my choke cover and coil (Merc 140, Rochester Carb 1351-5203A1, thermal choke) with an electric choke cover. Seems like a simple thing, but it sounds like there are some problems? Thanks.

Has anyone else converted a Merc 120 or 140 2-barrel carb choke from automatic (thermal) to electric by just replacing the cover plate and thermal coil (and hooking up the wire)? Seems so simple, but Don said there can be issues. Thanks in advance.

Re: Can you convert a 140 mercruiser carb to electric choke

I just done mine this spring. I have a 165 hp 6 cyl with a rochester 2gc. My stove pipe had rusted out so this was the easiest way for me. The electric choke works great. I did run a dedicated wire to the ignition switch ignition position as not to rob power from the coil. I ordered mine online from a company in california that really knows there stuff. i will look and see if i can find there website for you. they even gave a good tip where the stove pipe is in the manifold, where mine was rusted out, they said to take a .22 caliber shell and take the lead out of it, and knock the lead in to the manifold.

found the website, it is carbsonly.com, if you decide to go this way, simply remove your old choke cover before calling them. they will walk you through the website to make sure you get the right one while on the phone with them so make sure you are at the internet and have a cigarette lighter or match handy. good luck
