Re: New related question to stain on vinyl engine cover....

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions and input.

Ok, I have the stain out about as good as I can get... not perfect, but it is nearly gone.

Here is where I need help.... in my exuberance to clean and scrub out the 2 inch (diameter) stain, some of the original "sheen" on the vinyl engine cover was removed during the cleaning process. It is nearly unnoticeable and you have to look at just the right angle to see that some of the luster or sheen is removed.

I know how terrible it is that I did this, but what is done is done and I can't change it. I feel like a knucklehead and crappy about it. But, I am trying to move on....

My goal is to apply some kind of protectant ( if there is one) that will help protect against additional aging on this small area where some of the factory sheen was removed from the vinyl, during the cleaning process.

The area I am looking to protect is the "Vertical" area of the rear vinyl, about 2 inches in diameter at the stern of the boat.....the attached picture was taken before the stain occurred. I am just posting it to hopefully show the area that I want to protect.

-Can I get any suggestions on products to try ?

-Perhaps I stick with the 303 Aerospace Protectant ?

-Ideally, I would like a product that has some luster + a Protectant to it ??

-Is there something that I can spray on, or use, which will help bring back some shine in the cleaned area and protect it in the future ?

Hello, everyone, I spoke with someone at Crane Interiors, the maker of the vinyl and he couldn't provide me with any advice regarding any product to protect the vinyl and restore the sheen.

Any thoughts regarding best products to use, regarding my question below, would be greatly appreciated :)

Remember, is there is to much shine everyone will fly around the boat everytime you make a sharp turn.

The are that you over cleaned will now always get dirtier than the rest of your vinyl. That is why you don't want to use abrasive or harsh cleaners on vinyl and that includes magic erasers. I know that doesn't help you with your current questions. I use what the manufacturers suggest for cleaning the vinyl. You can go to their websites for what they recommend. Since the manufacturer of your vinyl isn't helping you, you can go to other vinyl websites to see what they say.

here is what Nautolex has to say:
http://www.omnova.com/products/marineUpholstery/documents/NautolexCleanInstruct.pdf
Nautolex topping on the bottom of the page is not vinyl so don't use those instructions.

Thanks to you all who stayed "solution focused" on this thread. I took another look at the vinyl and it isn't quite as "damaged" as I thought...just not quite as shiny. But, the damage appears to be less then I originally thought.

I have decided on meguiars # 40. It has a little more gloss than the 303 protectant.

Golden Eagle ( the makers of 303 Aerospace ) said they would call me about any interaction with vinyl, sunbrella and the 303. Sunbrella didn't know of any interaction.

Perhaps it was just mold afterall....who knows.

Onward.

Thanks all.
